One of the Channel Islands in the Bay of St Malo a few miles off the french coast.

The islands were occupied by Germany from 1940-1945.

Yep, I looked it up. I knew the island, but I didn't know that it counted as a country. I thought it was part of the UK.

British yes, UK no. We've got an interesting arragnement with the EU too. Free movement & trade but not directly controlled from Brussels etc.

It gets more and more confusing. Now, what's the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom?

Man, I always thought I'm quite good with European geography at least, but I begin to doubt now.

This is actually working better than I might have guessed. A poll wouldn't work because you wouldn't know which countries to list.

Tony Blair et al govern the UK. His government set taxes, create laws and set policy etc. The UK’s head of state is the reigning monarch presently the Queen ‘Liz and at some point (probably) King Charles/William etc.

Jersey has it’s own government, money, stamps etc. and is separate from the UK parliament. Confusingly however our head of state happens to be the same person but she is not our Queen, she’s our Duke (male or female their always our Duke) at official dinners etc. the toast is “Long live the Queen, our Duke”.

Jersey used to come under the rule of the Duke of Normandy (northern part of France) William the conquer took England (later the UK) from Harold in 1066. The balance of power shifted and the Duke of Normandy lost his lands in Normandy but retained England as its King. The people of Jersey stayed loyal to him rather than France but didn’t want to be absorbed into the Kingdom. After some trouble with the peasants the King of England lost a lot of his real power, but crucially not his head, and again Jersey stayed loyal and as reward in 1204 let Jersey be a separate self governing nation.

If I understood you correctly, the Queen is head of the UK, while Mr Blair is head of GB, right? So, there's no geographical difference, but a political one.

No, no, no! The Queen is queen of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc, etc, but Duke of Normandy. TB is merely her first minister in the UK.
