I suggest that everyone contributing to this tally make sure their Location field is filled in. To do so, go to your user profile, click Edit Profile, fill in "Where you live", and click Save Changes.

If many/most members did that, it might give us an easier way to gather some location statistics. Then all we'd need is a volunteer member willing to gather the statistics and post them. I wonder who that might be? :rolleyes:

As always Doctor Q, your enthusiasm for statistics is quite astounding. The only problem I see with that theory is that not even actually puts ''regular'' locations in their profile area.
Ex:
Abstract has earth :)
I have "France (for one.five more weeks)
etc etc

So unless someone *wink* wanted to sort through all of the non-standard responses I'm not convinced that would really help. Although, the masses might have a standard location listed in which case you could gather info on a lot of the members who just fill out the profile completely, but I think a lot of the heavy users have ''funny'' things in their profile, making it rather difficult to poll.
I of course could be wrong, it might be worth a shot.
Oh, my other concern was with current location vs. normal location.....I changed my location because it was three months, I know some other users (diff. forum) who change it nearly daily to update their exact location :p, thankfully no one seems to be quite that silly here, but still could be another issue.

Yes, but assuming I did the math correctly, there are only 117 people that have replied which is diddly considering this off the frontpage:

Currently Active Users: 356 (75 members and 281 guests)

and from Forum Stats:
Members: 54,838

So of the 54,838 registered members only 117 have replied with a location here. To me, .2134% isn't all that great of a turnout :rolleyes: :p although for a saving grace if you account only the current online members (at 75 as shown above) that is more than 100% response, great! :D

There has to be some way to get this more noticed. Is there any way to make it a quick poll, then sticky it to the frontpage so that whenever someone logs in they are brought here before anywhere else? They don't have to respond if it is a poll unless they want, actually can it be done with no responses at all!? That would be the ticket, solely check your box and move on....that would rock.

You could start by suggesting it as a MacPolls question, with the few dozen most-likely countries as choices.

True, although deciding on which countries to include and which not to include would be difficult. The problem with location is that unlike the "occupation poll" where people just went to the nearest field, here people are not going to want to selected the nearest country to theirs, actually I wouldn't want them to because it would mess up the results. I guess "Other" is always an option, I'll suggest the highest-replied countries listed below and see what we get I guess.

Maybe it would be worthwhile to use Other (Africa), Other (Antarctica), Other (Asia), Other (Europe), and Other (South America) to collect stats by continent. How many votes would we get for Antarctica?
