Some MacRumors page used 32GB of my 48 GB of memory which caused my MacPro system to become unusable, forcing a reboot. Installing adblock plus (as Krayzkat suggests) fixed the problem.

My sense is that it's ads. Not limited in my case to MR, but because it's usually in an open tab I will see it eventually. Currently at 768MB and 10% or so of CPU. The only thing higher is news.google.com, at 1,048 MB. Restarting Safari, or deleting the tab and starting another one fixes this for me.

I can't believe the amount of ram some of these pages use. I use AdGuard and still pages are taking hundreds of mbs of ram. Give me a text only reading view please!

For those who don't know -- you can make an annual $35 contribution to the site and never see any ads, ad-blocking extension or otherwise. Extensions might make rendering the page less space complex, but it ups time complexity significantly.

I went from 220MB to 480MB just by logging out. The advertising seems to double the amount of memory used.
