It'll look the like the Zune section at Best Buy . . . tumbleweed, a lot of dust, and the faint sound of windchimes. Once in a while someone will pull up asking for directions or to use a phone.

That's about it.

too many exhibitors and attendees prolly jumped to CES. moving macworld a month later gives exhibitors and attendees the ability to attend both rather than having to choose one or the other.

Should become WWDC-lite

Not so much for the nuts-and-bolts developers, but if Macworld were to become much more of an educational conference, I would be willing to send employees. I'd like to go also, but if it starts to look like something that could boost our productivity and take our services in a new direction, it might be just the thing for our people.

You answered your own question. Trade shows are pretty much dying off all over. There just isn't a compelling case to be made for them anymore, now that we've got this new-fangled intarweb.

Big companies are pulling out of trade shows because the shows aren't helping their bottom line. But for small companies that may not get a lot of exposure, it still could be a good opportunity to display their stuff. I think it has a chance to survive in a smaller format, with Mac diehards attending and not as much press, but still covered by the Mac-specific mags and blogs.

Of course some of the luster will be lost without Apple there but nonetheless, if Apple stays the course and sticks to a regular product rollout schedule there is no reason why tons of companies that make accessories and software can't be there to ply there wares after a January product / software rollout.

Expect a great explosion of accessories no one has even thought of making/using yet now that API's that allow access to the dock are out:cool:

Makes perfect sense. It would get steamrolled trying to complete against CES w/o an Apple Keynote. The MW organizers would be smart to transform the show into a WWDC for everyone else type of event. And center it around the Mac since Apple is content to focus on the iPhone since it's got more growth potential at the moment.

....Why does everyone think this is going to die?

Its a trade show devoted to macs, people will attend with or without apple. Its kinda like any other trade show....

People will attend, but it'll never get the same volume of attendees nor quality presenters and vendors. Without Apple a good bit of the "shine" falls off Macworld for me.

At least the mag is still pretty good.

Thats exactly what I was saying. In will no longer be MASSIVE, but still a sizeable event, pretty much the main Mac centered trade show out there.

It is the main event right?

It took up both North and South halls this year. I know this because our booth was in a different hall than Apple's!

I should clarify.

Before 9/11, the north and south halls would be FULL.

I mean completely wall to wall.

After 9/11 the expo starting putting up small walls around the booth area to hide all of the empty space.

MacWorld has already been dead show since 2001.

Which is why last years was huge.....

It might survive as a smaller, west-coast US trade-show but certainly won't drag in the press, bloggers and apple fanboys (myself included) like in the past.

SF is a long way from Sydney but last year I had planned to attend pretty much just to go to a Steve-note. Family problems made me cancel (fortunately as it turned out!) but I certainly shan't make the effort now that Apple aren't there.

Without the slightly crazy fans like me, and the press and bloggers... it'll just be another local show.

Except it wasn't. People who have only been to recent MacWorlds only THINK it was big.

So, as with most trade shows as of late, it has slowed down from its former high point. It sure as hell didnt look at deaths door this go around. We'll see how next years goes.

You are making an illogical conclusion. What does 9/11 have to do with MacWorld? Nothing.

I was at MWNY in '01. Apple was there. It was the deadest, most boring MW I'd ever been too. In fact I only had an exhibit hall pass but the keynote overflow areas were so empty they let everyone in. Of course the keynote was pretty lame too, especially for a SteveNote.

I think closer to the truth is that 2001 was an Apple post-iMac buzz, pre-iPod. The products were rather boring and app development was stagnating. Then by the time Apple found itself again with the iPod the Internet 2.0 was up and in action. There was no real reason to go cross country to find out the latest in Apple wares when you could do it from your home computer. You could even watch the SteveNote.

Trade shows in general are withering (E3, Comdex, Summer CES) because of the way people do business and get their information now, not because of 9/11.

It's on my birthday!

Something tells me that I should wait because this could be the iPod Touch announcement I've been waiting for!
