Hah! A Windows Home Server PC won an award at MacWorld? Wow...

(the reason it won is probably because it supports Time Machine backups over the network, so you dont have to shell out for such a single-dimensional product like Time Capsule).

Um, yep I think that one's pretty self explanatory...

*Shrugs* I understand people's gripes on this year's (and Apple's last) Macworld, but personally I'm liking the updates and upcoming products that Apple presented (ESPECIALLY iMovie). I really can't wait to get my hands on the new iMovie and (hopefully) SlingBox Player for the iPhone.

On a sidenote even though I utterly despise WebEx (as well as ANY conference call/web meeting apps), I'm thoroughly impressed with the iPhone app. Considering my company uses WebEx a lot, I immediately downloaded it.

(still working on switching out my crappy HP desktop for a Mac @ work. Getting close!)

windows home server is great. yes it says windows, but its one hell of a box.

My fav from MWSF09 is the fastmac $99 bluray slimline USB drive with a driver cd including pirated software and a keygen and the .NFO file from the pirates.

Exactly. I would bet that we will see an Apple event within the next month.

Maybe not an event, but just new products. I don't think that Apple was all that prepared to release a bunch of products at MacWorld this year. I am almost positive that there is a Mac Mini or iPhone Nano prototype out at Apple's headquarters getting ready to soon be manufactured. I just takes a while for Apple to get their products out selling.

The videos on the HP MediaSmart Server page are hilarious - I'm not sure if they are meant to be, but they are sooo cheesy. I mean, I had to wipe the cheddar oozing from the edges of my monitor after watching them.

I'm not sure how Americans feel about being patronised like that, but it certainly wouldn't go down well here in NZ.

I've seen worse. The music didn't help with the cheesiness though. In all honesty, if Apple doesn't announce a HMS by December 1st, this will be on my xmas list.

There goes that, I was planning on ordering a new 24" iMac with boosted graphics performance...In all, not too shabby Apple. I'm thinking we might see an Apple only event that is planning on attracting the MacWorld fan base. Something Apple can call their own, so that they have full control. I think this is what they have been aiming for all along. Think about it, how many probable products did not come out that very possibly will be introduced? (Revised iMac and Mac Mini, as well as the Snow Leopard news) I'm thinking they have some big things planned for a show of their own. Possibly an iPhone Nano, or NetMac? Something that would generate a lot of press, much like: "Steven Jobs introduced the new iPhone Nano today in a new type of Apple event he says will be around for awhile, he calls it AppleWorld (some sort of equivalent)."

I don't understand the griping. I guess if Apple doesn't introduce a phaser or a tricorder some people are disappointed.

The new iWork and iLife look great. The changes to iMovie are hugely helpful for me. I'll use it to help stay employed this year.

The new version of Keynote also has a number of solid improvements.

The new 17" MBP looks great. I'd get one if I didn't know that Intel was bringing out Nehalem later this year. That is Intel's schedule not Apple's. I like that there is an option for the matte screen and they kept FW800. The battery looks interesting though I'll be happier after it gets out in the field for a while.

I picked up a copy of Vertus Fluid Mask. I've seen this product demonstrated for several years. They've finally come down in price to where I can afford it. They talked about applying this to movies so that you can do "green screen" effects without the green screen. Can't wait.

I have to give it to Cultured Code for Things. I've been using the Mac beta with the iPhone app. I love it. It looks like a native app and allows you to quickly add to do's to your list. It also syncs very quickly. I'm most likely going to plop down $50 for 1.0.

Don't forget, you can save $10 off the desktop software by using the code THINGSPRESALE20 at checkout (until Jan 15).

If people didn't gripe, Apple wouldn't stay "on their toes". It really doesn't take that long to turn around a new product HW & SW these days. Especially for the consumer electronics market - you can always let the users test the firmware. :) I'm sure they've got some things ready, just waiting for the right time ( like PC or iPhone sales to stagnate a little ).

I do like your comment about the phaser and tricorder though, probably true for some apple diehards. I'm waiting for the lightsaber. :D

Shades of 'Lemons' done in a less intelligent & artistic style. But considering many on this first page welcome the Servers - makes me think MobileMe may be loosing potential business down the road. Especially if it supports the iPhone over WLAN/3G seemlessly & efficiently for storing photos/videos/notes/saved mapping locations. (Doh on that last thought, gmaps doesn't allow you to save way points to internal iPhone memory does it? Every other phone it cannot)

HP MediaSmart Server advertises the iTunes functionality:

"The HP MediaSmart Server has a “Server for iTunes” feature whereby you can automatically copy iTunes music from family members’ PCs to the HP MediaSmart Server to be easily shared around your home network. The Server for iTunes feature even preserves playlists from each user’s PC. The Server for iTunes feature will synchronize new music to the server as that music is added to individual PCs. Music on the server can then be accessed from each individual PC’s iTunes library. "

Does this mean that there is one big centralized iTunes library on the server, but iTunes can't use it straight from the server? So all the iTunes music files must be on the local disk, and server only helps to keep the iTunes libraries synchronized on all computers?

My experience with HP MediaServers has been that they will access each song from the users' computers via network. But, since this one has a hard drive, it will store the songs on the server.

In iTunes, it will appear as another computer on the network (if you're used to college campus-styled networks, 50+ people show up in "Shared Libraries", and you have access to all of their songs for listening...if they don't put passwords on their libraries.) I suppose it could be reached from any computer in the world if you had the right network address.

It was interesting to see that iLife an iWork will ship in a package with Leopard when iLife ships at the end of January. I guess that is a solid clue that Snow Leopard won't ship till several months later, probably around WWDC.

That's not MacRumors' design. That's MacWorld's design.

TO MACWORLD EDITOR(S):
It looks like it was made in MS Word with the WordArt feature. Plus it looks like it was made in the 1980's.

Best of ???

ROFL they better should start to produce what the fans want to see.....until now the new products are big joke and if they continue to plan updates like 17" MAcBook now with 4USB and 5mm thinner = $3000......Good Night Apple !

Multiple embarrassments

I work in film and television, and I tell you - those ads are a shocking embarrassment! What joker production company did HP hire to make them? Surely their advertising budget could have gotten them something... 'normal'! The HP executive who signed off on those ads should be sacked. And the production company should go back to making wedding videos.

Apple, too, had better step up. Where is their iTunes/Media server solution? Or the new Mini, for all that? A Windows solution beating them to the punch and winning "best in show"? If Apple doesn't come up with something great (the Mini at LEAST) within a month I'm going hakintosh.

Think one of the problems with the MacWorld events was that Apple may have felt that it had to time its announcements to their schedules. Now they can do it whenever it best suits them.

Been running since beta. No issues here.

i was really hoping for an apple media centre announcement as at home this is what i most want. can i ask how does the itunes server work - i understand it shows up under shared? i have heard you dont get album covers or playlists is this true? can i make a playlist on a Mac that includes songs from the shared server? what happens if i then sync this with my ipod? do the songs on the server get synched as well? i wouldnt want to move my existing library and invest the time in importing all the CDs i havent yet done for them not to sync to my ipod. I have seen several reviews of the HP box but they never seem to really describe what its actually like to use with itunes. i also presume that to stream music to an airtunes port i will still need to do it on my mac? i was hoping for a app on my iphone that would talk to the apple media centre and stream music either to it over wifi or 3g or to a remote speaker like an itunes?

i am starting to rant but it is getting increasingly annoying that Apple dont give any indication of whats coming when. i understand they dont want people to stop buying iMacs today because there is a new one coming next month but i may and go buy a HP box tomorrow when i would hold out for an Apple one next month or even in 6 months if i knew it was coming. what i am not going to do is buy both.

perhaps Macrumours can start doing reviews as threads? linked to the buyers guide? where people can ask questions (rather than ask about problems they are having) and others can answer them?

Just like everyone else that is pressured to release products at CES?

Its an Annual event, just does not sneak up on you. A more realistic assumption is that apple feel that they are too big & important to have someone like macworld steal the limelight, by pulling out they can kill the event and create their own annual showpiece. Its all about control.

The big looser here is the Fans that look forward to the event each year. I still believe that apple will setup their own event, and if they do, its a clear example of them taking their bat and ball and walking away from all the other kids they played with for a very long time, cause they no longer want to play the game at someone else's house and want everyone to come to theirs.

At very least they could have gone out with a bang, some people paid good money to turn up, MacWorld gets iLife 09 and CES gets Windows 7 beta.... yeah MacWorld Rocked! They could have at least talked about Snow L. Poor Form from apple.

Pulse SmartPen

Does anyone have any experience with the Pulse SmartPen?

It looks extremely awesome, and useful for me as a student.

But for $329 AU I am unsure whether it is worth it.

Apple is invited to give a keynote speech. It is (and was) Apple's decision to turn the speech into product announcements.
