Apple has a great opportunity to introduce the new iMac, Mac mini and Apple TV next month in conjunction with the analog television broadcast shutdown on February 17th. The analog shutdown is going to be big news, and Apple can profit from it.

I forgot about that aspect. Between that and the 25th Anniversary, I think this might be spot-on. I am of the opinion that they will announce all new hardware on the anniversary, and use the next months shut down as a reason to upgrade to the new Apple TV.

iMac expectations?

What exactly were the iMac expectations?

Quad Core Intel and decent graphics would be nice!

I'd buy a i7 iMac with >9000 series graphics. :D

The mini desperately needs an update and price drop... Originally the mini and Apple TV were one product, no?

Net-Book

I really wish Apple would have released a Net-Book. My Fiance REALLY needs a new computer, and a inexpensive Net-Book type mac would be perfect for her needs. I could see me picking up one for myself also for when I'm just making a quick trip somewhere (of course if we could use a bluetooth keyboard with the iPhone, and if it had Copy & Paste then I would be set for a lot of on-the-go type stuff)

The Mac mini, in particular, has been long overdue for a refresh, and the recent rumors seemed to indicate that it would finally get some worthy upgrades (dual monitor, FireWire).
When the Mac mini update does surface, I'd expect we will see a smaller footprint and overall size, no optical drive, no firewire and the introduction new video out - one display port and one HDMI port along with a price reduction. This will become the Mac mini/AppleTV hybrid. Use it an a computer with display port or fire up the Front Row/AppleTV software and use it as a media center connected through HDMI to your big HDTV.

this would be great, but I would hope they would offer an option for an optical drive, and I would hope they would not drop FireWire.

Do the NVIDIA chipsets that Apple uses support quad-core Core CPU's?

Also, Apple did use a event in Feb 2006 to release a new Mac mini and could we see a "spotlight turns to desktops" sort of event?

I agree. But I think Apple wants to ditch firewire on all consumer machines - which includes the mini. I also suspect that if they ditch the optical drive from the mini - maybe they will support the one that works with the Air as an option. Apple really wants people to buy movies from iTunes which is why the AppleTV never had an optical drive.

Ridiculous how old that box is. It's heavy, it's huge, and fellow PC users are walking around with their Mid-Towers with liquid cooling just laughing at Apple. And deservedly so.
Don't bash my beloved cheese grater!
It's the last and only Mac who still deserves the attribute "Pro".
I like that the thing is built like a rock. I have never seen any computer with a cleaner "interior design" than the current Mac Pro.
You can swap hard disks or memory modules in less than a minute.
Even without water cooling, my 8 core is the most silent Mac I've ever owned,
And I'll bet this beautiful machine will still run like a charm, when your fancy iMacs and Macbooks have already been through several sad reincarnations as stupid Cola cans!

Now go and play with your glossy toys, you silly ignorant fanbois... ;)

Pick up a G4 iBook from eBay.

It'll still be better than a new netbook, because it won't be running Windows or Linux.

Mobile quad core has been avalible since october 2008. I'm not suprised if imac never gets quad core. Thats lame.

Or if you can afford it, a refurbished MacBook Air. This is much better than any netbook, and they are a steal at $999.

I appreciate the input, but the netbooks I've seen are usually in the $300-$400ish range and about 10" screen (smaller for her to throw in her backpack)

The MacBook Air would be a great solution, but part of the draw towards the netbooks are certainly the cost.

pretty much said...

Apple has already said they don't want to deal with the expectations game in January with Macworld so they pulled out.

And it makes a lot of sense. It's not easy to make a big splash every January.
They know what they are doing.

Just hoping for a nice mac mini with full HD capability to replace my music server Intel Core Solo.

Mac mini...what a joke. 1 GB ram? Combo drive? Intel GMA? This is 2004-5 ish.

Dear Mr. Jobs,

I currently have $2500.00 saved and it can all be yours if you would please release the new iMac's.

Thanks!!

All signs seem to be pointing to a Desktop Event. Question is, will Apple wait until the Mac Pro chips are available, or just update the consumer side of things at an earlier date. Would be nice to hear about the status of Snow Leopard as well.
Since it seems that Gainestown is entering production this quarter, the Mac Pros may be updated as late as WWDC 2009.

As we are all aware that the next imacs will house the new Nvidia chipsets, however there has been no mention of the cpu specs expected, whats the likely hood of a quad core imac?
One rumor mentioned that Apple will use quad-core CPUs in this quarter.

I don't expect to ever see a "netbook" from Apple. They have the Air which is selling at $1800. They aren't going to shrink the screen just to make it cheaper. Besides, Apple will never sell a $600 laptop, let alone $500 or even $400. Of course, this runs OS X just fine for $329. You can find out how to run it very easily.

Yeah, what's with the lack of quad cores? Brand spankin new 17 inch laptops (yes, I saw them and touched them at Macworld and they are nice) but with Apple going with intel we all know the road map, and no quad cores in the lineup.

If you look at the Macrumors buying guide still almost all of the products are due for an update.

The only "netbook" I see is a larger iPod touch.

There's the heat reason, all quad-cores before the April 2008 iMac (so they would be in time for that iMac) were much hotter than what can be put in the iMac. Only recently have there been 65 W desktop quad-cores, which are believed to be just low-power enough to fit in the iMac. Mobile quad-cores are still to hot (45 W) to fit in the MacBook Pro, although they can theoretically go in the iMac. But…

…there's also the GHz hypothesis, where Apple won't use a quad-core CPU with a lower GHz than a dual-core CPU in the same lineup. The Mac Pros initially had 3.0 GHz dual-cores, and the 2.67 GHz quad-core was skipped in favor of a 3.0 GHz quad 5 months later. So apparently Apple has no problem waiting half a year for a "suitable" quad-core.

With the 65 W quad-cores, they are likely to go in the whole lineup, unless heat stops them from going in the 20".
