This is actually really great news.

Between cash back portals and discount gift cards, you can potentially get 20% off new apple products.

BeFrugal offers 10% cash back on purchases through Macy's and discount gift card sites like Raise.com often have gift cards to department stores like Macy's for 10-15% off.

You could never get discounts like that directly through apple or through big box electronic stores like Best Buy. The best discounts on those are 1% or 2%. I'd be getting in on this before they close the loop hole

Update:

Upon further investigation, BeFrugal and eBates both specify in the terms and conditions that Apple products do not qualify but GivingAssistant does not say anything about apple products.

Umm... I have that 20% coupon from Macy's... I bet I can't use it on Apple products...

Yeah, coupons will not work, tested earlier, but I ran a trial and gift cards definitely work and you can get a much bigger discount on macy's gift cards than apple gift cards. I haven't successfully tested the cash back portal so there could be something in their terms that prevents you from getting the discount on apple products (best buy does this). But I can't find anything in the terms & conditions for Macy's

NM: cashback portal is a dud.

"No cash back on Apple brand items"

but still 10% is better than nothing. SaveYa.com has a few right now at 10%.

The first? Nah. Not the first.

Back in the mid-to-late 80s, Burdine's Florida had an Authorized Apple Dealer at its stores in Miami. I know because when I was a kid my mother would take me to the mall and let me hang out there playing with the computers. The section was dedicated to the point that it was an entire room, with its own staff and all.

Eventually they stopped selling computers, though, and then a few years after that Macy's bought out Burdine's. But it's not the first time Apple sells their products in a department store!

Really? You do realize that every other major PC manufacturer out there once had products in department stores, right? Even game consoles used to be popular in them.
"Once had" they don't now. I think for good reason. Would you say you think this is a great idea?

Macy's isn't another Walmart, the stuff they carry isn't "low-budget junk" it is high end and name brand. Apple products will fit right in with those $80 plain white Tommy Hilfiger polos. It's not about Apple having more presence, it's about them having a partnership that will sell more products.

That being said I don't see this being much of a benefit to Macy's as Best Buy has carried Apple products for quite a while now. Or you know, the internet.

Respectfully I disagree. Macy's is cheap for clothing because of the discounts. The whole apple at department stores is reminding be of apple pre 98.

This is hardly a new concept and interestingly enough, Steve killed these when he came back to Apple. The only store within a store left long after Apple Stores started opening was the ones in CompUSA as they were staffed by Apple Employees.

Back in the day, Apple computers were in Sears, Circuit City, Fry's and all kinds of general stores and they were awful. If Apple has their own employees staffing it, there's hope. If not, it'll just turn into a run-down part of the store where people come in with questions and the lady who specializes in blenders will shrug at questions and ignore customers.

This is not the first time in a department store. It is the first in a long time, but Sears used to sell Macs. I bought a laser printer at Sears in early 1993, and they had Apple computers on display, and for sale, at that time. They stopped selling them when Steve Jobs came back, and focused on stores like Best Buy Computer City, Circuit City, and to a greater degree, CompUSA, until they started opening their own stores.

When I first bought my Apple IIe, it was from a dedicated reseller. When I got home, I discovered That there was still a card of some type that I needed (can't remember which, too long ago). I was able to actually go to Macy's that evening and pick it up. I bought both my Power PC 6500 and Apple iMac G3 Graphite version at Sears. Knew what I was buying so didn't need any assistance. Between the IIe and the Power PC, bought my Performa from Comp USA.
However, at this point, it seems that Angela is trying to go the fashion route instead of the tech way, IMHO. But whatever floats your boat.
"Gee, Liz, after I get my makeover, let's go and buy an Apple watch to match my new outfit. Maybe I'll pick up a new Macbook Pro....Oh...wait!"

Best But has a dedicated section. It doesn't do much different than when it was a section of Apple products arranged my Best Buy itself. There is more branding, but they are still using the same employees and carry about the same number of products, so it's not a major change for retailers that already carry Apple products.
Was that Best Butt, or Best Bud :D Dang spell checker, grrrr  Anyway, we know what you meant.

You can still buy some refurbished models of MacBooks from sears online. Man, I love sears, the one in my town is still locally owned and that makes it that much better.

Go to Macy's or walk 200 feet to the Apple Store. Hmmm

I guess if you live in an area without an Apple Store nearby.

I can't see Macy's having a staff member there to help. Most workers there are clueless about computers.

Hi I'd like to buy a Mac!

Ah yes, that's in our make up department. What color lipstick do you want?

If Apple could arrange for these stores to handle product repairs, then it would make it much easier for consumers to feel that they don't need to be close to an Apple Store to receive quality service.

Many Best Buy's have a Apple Solutions Consultant that works directly for Apple and is at that store full time. Also, Geek Squad is a Apple Autherized Service Center so they will take in iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, etc. for service. You can even make appointments.

The more exposure, the better. Unless you're part of the "it's uncool to buy something that you can get at Macy's" crowd, of course.

This seems so out of place. I could see them maybe selling the Apple Watch, but that is about it. I can see it maybe paying off over the holiday season but through the majority of the year I just don't see many people going to pick up a pair of jeans and grabbing a new iMac at the same time.
