Apple today announced that Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition is coming to Apple Arcade on August 6, a new entry in the franchise built specifically for the service with a season-based structure and current NFL rosters.

The game is a full Madden title with no ads or in-app purchases, and it includes both Franchise and Quick Play modes, with player ratings drawn from real NFL performances. A weekly story engine drives Franchise mode, casting players as GM and tasking them with guiding a team through shifting storylines, keeping fans onside, and building toward a title. Controller support is available across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

Retro Bowl College+ also launches August 6, putting players in charge of one of 250 college programs in this spinoff of the original pixel-art Retro Bowl.

On September 3, NFL Retro Bowl '27 adds a new Gauntlet Mode, where players start with limited resources and try to string together 15 wins in a row for the top spot on the leaderboard, picking between easier matchups or riskier ones that pay out real NFL players and perks. Progress carries over between runs even after a loss, building toward a final matchup against a rival team.

A handful of existing Arcade sports titles are also set to receive updates. NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition now includes Tyrese Maxey as a new Paragon player and has added the 2016-2024 era to its Association mode. PGA TOUR Pro Golf gained a new course, Bear's Best Atlanta, and starting July 16, NFL Retro Bowl '26 is rolling out Historic Super Bowl challenges built around some of the league's most memorable title games.

Apple also pointed to a handful of Arcade games that can now be sampled on the App Store without a subscription, including PowerWash Simulator, Mini Motorways, Cooking Mama: Cuisine!, and Play-Doh World.

Apple Arcade is a subscription service that provides access to hundreds of games across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. All of the games are free of ads and in-app purchases. In the U.S., Apple Arcade costs $6.99 per month, and it is also bundled with other Apple services in all Apple One plans. Apple Arcade can be accessed through the App Store and the Apple Games app.

I see no reason that the full games couldn’t be available on the App Store on Mac.

I’d buy CFB 27 instantly.

It's time to include some AAA console-levels games on Apple Arcade. The hardware definitely supports it now.
It'd be nice but I don't have much hope given Apple's track record. I think that HALO presentation/situation in the early 00's made them a bit gun-shy. Personally I'd love to see some day-and-date AAA gaming titles, and have long said they need them, but Apple's gaming roadmap doesn't seem to want to include the necessary components/configurations to get said titles.

I got my hopes up for nothing this looks exactly like madden mobile. I want higher graphics on Mac and iPad. The same as current gen consoles.

Yikes. Looks just like madden mobile from 2016.

I’d have thought it would at least look like college football 27 mobile graphics wise.
yeah, I was skeptical from the start because it has to be small enough to fit on an Apple TV 4K and still have enough space to function and let other apps coexist. Thus the 3.3GB mobile version instead of the 40GB (2025 PS4) version.

I'm in... with full franchise mode and updated rosters it better than nothing. Hopefully it will tide me over until I spring for a PS5.

There are quite a few quality games, although they aren't for everyone (but there should be something most people would enjoy): Dungeon Clawler, Sneaky Sasquatch, Balatro, Stardew Valley, Cult of the Lamb, Slay the Spire, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, Vampire Survivors.

Dredge+, Disney Dreamlight Valley and Pro Tour Golf, on the Mac. Highly recommend. Playable on iPhone/iPad, but excels on a large screen on Mac.

The fact that this is just a recycle of madden mobile and not built on the same engine as the new CFB 27 is disappointing. Apple has the right idea but always gets the implementation wrong when it comes to gaming. CFB 27 on mobile is impressive looking and feels like 75% of the console game. This Madden Mobile clone will feel like a 2016 game.

John Madden died in 2021. It's high time they found a successor for this video game series. Surely there are worthy football players, coaches, or commentators out there.
That’s like saying “We’ve been named Twitter so long, it’s time we found a new name. One that tosses years of brand recognition out the window.”

For your information, Twitter has been renamed X a while back, and it doesn't seem to have affected its popularity. There are many other examples of businesses or products that successfully changed their name to modernize their image or for other business reasons.

nah, leave it. Madden was the reason video game football went from a rather lame (in retrospect... I sure played a lot of it at the time...) 8 player arcade game to a serious 11 player sim. He insisted on 11 players per side, which allowed real football plays and strategy. That shouldn't be underestimated or forgotten.
