As an Indian I can say buying iPhone is for a status symbol/aspirational/premium feeling for many ppl and some buy as they are Apple fans (myself as a fan).
Without official Apple store online/offline, no official Apple repair and none of Apple apps, content, services for India there is very less value add for an any Indian to buy an iPhone even if they can afford the price.

and?

.

135k rupee = 1800 bucks. 150 bucks a month. cheapest iphone se 2 cost 400 to start. thats 3 months of salary. if thats my salary buying a iphone would be the bottom of the list.
Per capita means nothing. India has plenty of rich people.

It’s a shame they won’t make phones in the USA. You can make up all the excuses you want, but we are talking about a $2 trillion company - they could make it happen.

How about giving back to the country that made them this successful? Pay your taxes and create jobs making phones here. It is crazy that people think that is too much to ask.

How do you "make it happen"? Just snap your fingers, and magically a million people willing to work for $600 a month jump out of the trees?

Under your logic, it is possible to launch a manned mission to Mars next week. Because NASA can "make it happen."

If it was possible, it would have already been done.

If it was possible, it would have already been done.

You need to add a caveat to your statement: "if it was possible to do with the margins Apple wants, it would have already been done."

Realistically speaking with enough money you can do almost anything. Apple is assembling iPhones in Brazil and India.

How do they make it happen? At a high level they make it happen by allocating budget and resources. At a somewhat lower level they examine their current process, come up with a skills, equipment, etc inventory (among other things), then start costing everything out and finding the gaps. Then you cost out the gaps.

It's not rocket science, it's operations and logistics.

I'm not sure why people here believe that assembly is "skilled labor." It used to be done by child labor back in the day - did those kids have college degrees? It's skilled, but it's not that hard to learn. That's how China went from a nation of farmers to a nation of assemblers to what they are today. There are highly educated and skilled workers in the supply chain, but the idea that the whole chain is made up of college educated field experts is ridiculous.

I'm with you. I've accepted that manufacturing will just never be a thing here (maybe at all the way things keep going...) like it is in China and now India here soon it's looking like. Not because it can't be done, but because these companies are so damn greedy when it comes to their profits. I was talking about this with someone just today actually, how Apple has all the money in the world but will only spend the bare minimum on R&D and true innovation because they know they have the ecosystem going for them. Why upgrade your products in any meaningful way when you know you've got customers you're holding hostage in your ecosystem? They're not going to leave, because they can't... Or at least can't easily, so Apple knows they can get away with trivial minor updates to their core products and services because what are people going to do, leave? Lol yeah, not likely. Those blue bubbles and the ability to FaceTime got us GOOD. It's pretty much the only reason I'm still with Apple tbh, and they know that to be true for a large portion of their customer base, which is exactly what they want

" India is also the world's second-largest smartphone market..."

China is first.
India is second.
USA is third.

No wonder Apple is so keen on selling its products to China and to India.
But is that just units? If China and India mostly buy SE2s and such and US buys current cycle Pros at $1k+ a pop, units won't matter as much.

Wait, if they can be made in India … why can't they be made here?

Tim said China was unique because of some kind of "craftsman" experience or another … how did it spring up in India and not the USA?

Well, considering how low the minimum wage is in the US, now that it is great again, it actually makes sense.

Thy can do that but, many consumers will not pay the price increase (which could mean $100 - $300 more) of the iPhone to make that happen. That would cut into Apple’s profit margin.

If Apple could sell iPhones at the same price as US(at 1USD=65 INR, though current currency rate is @75-76 ₹ ) they can easily beat Samsung with zero marketing cost. Now Apple gets lots of waivers on tariffs, duties, taxes, it should be possible but if they continue to sell at 2X the US price, they will continue to languish at 1% pie all the time.
