My iPad Pro is now my primary device. I rarely use my laptop anymore. I always charge mine every day, keyboard or not. I can go into a second day but wouldn’t make it through the whole day with the same usage. If you’re charging every or every other day it sounds normal to me. If that’s a big change for you then it may be something else. I do believe iOS 13 has resulted in more battery usage than previously but my Magic keyboard hasn’t worsened it much, very little compared to the keyboard folio that I also have. My guess is that battRey drainage issues is connected more to either software or increased usage. Especially for those who have seen their backlighting on even with the ipad locked.
Yeah I charge everyday as well. It’s what i use part for work along with my PC...battery has dropped from yesterday since downloading 13.5

it was off charge at 8am and at 17:40 it’s got 17% left.

8 hours, 30 minutes screen time.

I would tend to agree with you about increased usage, I think most people are home right now and probably on their devices a lot more than they even realize.

it is a change for me to have to charge every day or half way through the second day and I do think some of it has to do with more use. What I’m more concerned with is when the iPad is closed with the magic keyboard attached and I’m losing 5%-7% of battery with no use at all

I’m definitely getting much worse battery life now compared to the Smart Keyboard Folio. I feel like my 12.9 iPad Pro 2018 has taken a massive dive in battery life.
With the Smart Keyboard I would manage around 8 hours of use before putting my iPad on charge for the night with anywhere between 5% and 20%+ remaining.
With the Magic Keyboard I’m down to as low as 4-5 hours (currently screen time is saying 4 hours and 3 minutes and I’m down to 16% battery life).

Is there any way to view historical battery use on iPadOS? I understand that the Magic Keyboard will consume more power than the Smart Keyboard, but taking around a 40-50% battery hit seems really excessive? I still have my old keyboard so I’m going to switch back to that over the weekend and see if it improves, but time is running out to return the Magic Keyboard if there is an issue.

While writing this my iPad has dropped another 2% (it took me maybe 2 minutes to write this).

I’m mostly loving the keyboard, but can’t sacrifice half my battery life for a trackpad and extra key travel.

Mine is on 5% left at 18:34 but saying this I’m on about 10 hours screen time so it’s at the amount apple seems to project so i think mine is perfectly normal now.

I’ve just picked up my iPad to check this message and I’ve just hit 5% warning. My total screen on time is 4 hours and 14 minutes for today.

Damn that isn’t good, even after 13.5? Which iPad do you have? As I know some are saying the issues are those who have the 2018 model

Yeah downloaded 13.5 yesterday. It’s a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro with cellular (although I have cellular turned off most of the time while I’m at home).

I’m going to give it a try over the weekend with the old Smart Keyboard and see if there’s an improvement.

Perhaps the battery is just getting old and it’s a coincidence I’m noticing it now? I’m sure just a few weeks I was commenting on getting 8 hours of moderate to heavy use though.

Just a quick update. I spent today (Saturday) with the Smart Keyboard and my Battery finished the day on 57% with 4 hours and 37 minutes of use.

I would like to specify that my usage hasn’t been exactly the same as Friday’s.

Friday’s use was mainly email, microsoft office, playing podcasts, web browsing and Skype (text messaging).
Saturday’s use was mainly YouTube (website), playing podcasts, web browsing, FaceTime and Skype (text messaging).

This is a massive difference, but I will see if there’s still a massive difference on Monday when I’m using my iPad for work a lot more.

The screen brightness was the same on both days, both days also used WiFi with cellular turned off. Accessories attached were the Apple Pencil and my AirPods when using Skype/FaceTime.

What is the expectation for battery life with the keyboard? You can’t expect to have the same duration. As a previous poster said the wattage it draws would equate to about 2 hours less, give out take. Heck I get noticeable power draw with just the pencil connected.

I understand that there will be a power draw.

My iPad has always lived in the Smart Keyboard folio and has the apple Pencil attached whenever I’m not using it. My expected battery life in this setup was an easy 8+ hours.

With just the Smart Keybord exchanged out for the Magic Keyboard I seem to have dropped to around half of that - a reduction of 3-4 hours! I would find a 2 hour drop unacceptable, let along a 3-4 hour drop on top of what my Smart Keyboard got me. As I said I’m going to do a ‘working day’ with the Smart Keyboard and Magic keyboard to test.

Currently my Sunday has seen me drop to 42% with 5 hours and 24 minutes of use on the Smart Keyboard - within what I usually expect.

I expected a noticeable difference between my using my keyboard folio and using the new Magic Keyboard and trackpad. However with just some basic testing over 3 days trying to duplicate each days usage, one day using the keyboard folio, one day the Magic keyboard and trackpad, and one day using the Magic keyboard but not using the trackpad. I had seen one post that seemed to indicate there was a greater battery drainage when using the trackpad. Again what I was doing was just general observation attempting to duplicate the same tasks and usage each day. My experience was that there was barely any difference between each day’s use. Now that may not be the experience of others who use their iPads differently than I do.

However one thing I saw last night was that there still are software issues even in the current 13.5. While using my ipad last evening I noticed that my keyboard backlighting did not go out even after no interaction from me with either the ipad screen keyboard or trackpad. I waited about 5-10 minutes to see if perhaps the time for it to go dark had changed. The backlighting never went out. So for some who might lock the device and close the case the backlighting could remain on further draining the battery without them knowing it. I did lock my screen and the backlighting remained on, it should go out immediately. Removing the ipad from the case and then reconnecting it corrected the issue. But just to be certain I restarted the ipad.

While doing this I did notice a change with iOS 13.5 in the length of time the backlighting remains on after all interaction with the ipad or keyboard has stopped. In 13.4.1 it was about 5 seconds before my backlighting turned off after I stopped all interaction. Now in 13.5 it’s taking about 28 seconds. So there may even be a bit more battery drainage in the current ios.

I love my MKB but I thought i was seeing more battery drain than normal. So the last few days I have been doing a few experiments using it with the MKB and then a day without it. Although there was a difference it was not a concern.

So I have come to the conclusion that it is my 2018 iPad Pro that is at fault. I have been on the beta trail the last few months and now on 13.5 I will keep on monitoring it when the new betas start.

BTW my iPhone 11 Pro Max is draining like crazy now as well also on 13.5

Anyway it is not going to stop me using my MKB because I think it is an awesome bit of kit!

Mine lasts about 8-10 hours screen time when on it all day

Are the people that are having issues with this all have 2018? As for 2020 owners no issues? The was one review i saw that show the 2020 had a much better battery life over the 2018. The extra Ram at work? Battery size should be the same for both 2018 and 2020.

I have the 2018 IPP and I’ve noticed about a 10% extra drain on my battery life. I’m on 13.5. I wasn’t using a keyboard folio before this though, so it’s what I expected. The backlit keys aren’t turning off for about 25s after no activity and I’m hoping for more settings with a software update.

I’ ve been following this thread for a bit now and feel a need to chime in. I got the MKB a couple of days ago for my 2018 IPP and have been suspicious of some battery drain. I turned off my fully charged iPad at 5pm yesterday. When I started it at noon today, battery life was down 26%. That just doesn’t feel normal.

I can confirm my keyboard backlight likes to stay on all the time. If fixes itself if I remove the keyboard and snap it back on. However, the next day it will do the same issue. And it's a bit of a sneaky problem because I close the iPad into the keyboard when not in use, but the lights are still on.

So I thought that I'd try an experiment. After charging my iPP to 100%, I turned it off with the Magic Keyboard attached. Eight hours later I turned it on to find the battery at 85%. I turned it off again without the keyboard attached and when I turned it on again after leaving it overnight to find that the battery level had not changed. It appears that the keyboard drains causes battery drain even when the iPP is turned off. I'm not sure that I can tolerate this and may return the keyboard if I can't get an answer and solution.

as a comparison on my IPP 2020 with the magic keyboard, I left it unplugged at 100% last night and woke up to it at 98%, running 13.5.

That’s been my experience as well. Except that I can leave it for hours at 100% and as long as the screen is locked and the device is asleep it will still be 100% when I wake it. Now over 8-10 hours it might drop to 99 or 98% but that’s only because I get a lot of notifications during the day. At night I have do not disturb on between 8:30pm and 6:30am. During those hours with the device asleep and locked there is absolutely no battery drainage, 100% at 8:30, 100% at 6:30. The battery issues the others are running into, I would assume, is software related. One evening I did see that my backlight did not turn off when I locked the device. If I hadn’t caught it that would probably have resulted in a big battery drain. Hasn’t happened since.

Call me crazy, but for me it seems that 13.5.5 Beta hast better Battery Results on that Combo...

Keep us posted for a couple of days if you could! I will download the beta if it actually seems to help the battery life. I love the Magic Keyboard but this battery life issue sucks!

Purchased a brand new iPad Pro 12.9in a few weeks ago, battery life was fantastic.

Received MK last week and am now noticing extreme battery drain.
100% Charge drops to 80% in about 45mins - 1 hour.
I’ve been keeping it plugged in because of this. Is this considered normal battery behavior?
