That's what happens if you're not using OS X 10.11. I plugged it into my Mac mini running 10.10, and that's what happens there, too. You also don't get % battery etc. Clearly the software is not designed for any OS prior to 10.11 because... Apple.
I am running 10.11 - that's weird, I am missing the battery level indication too

Thanks I just found a small battery indicator in the bluetooth device list but not the larger one that's usually in the bottom left on keyboard set up, it's missing . . . .

What year/computer are you using?
2013 6 core Mac Pro with 64GB RAM running El Capitan 10.11 Beta (15A279b)
It MAY be because it the beta but that was the GM build which should be the same as the release version . . .

I'm using (15B38b) 10.11.1 beta. No issues here on my 2014 5K iMac. There's definitely some issue for you, though, since your shortcut keys aren't working correctly..

Thanks it looks like the issue may be that I haven't had any updates since that earlier build . . I have to find a way to continue getting the beta updates.

You have to install the GM yourself over your beta build. Otherwise you are stuck without updates.

Agreed across the board with everything in the OP. I'm trying not to think about the fact that I spent $100 on this thing, but there isn't a keyboard you can buy anywhere that feels this nice to type on (unless you like the huge ugly mechanical ones I guess). I would love to know why Apple insists on no backlight, though, and if they've truly abandoned the full size model (8 years since the wired one was released).

I'm guessing due to battery life considerations?

Picked up the new mouse and KB yesterday and the mouse feels pretty much the same as the old Magic Mouse, but I do like the feel of the keyboard.

Wow, just wow, the keyboard is so much better than the one in the MacBook. It's way more stable, the MacBook keyboard feels flimsy. The magic keyboard feels much more solid. I've typed on it since Thursday and already bought an extra for at home. This is the keyboard mechanism that they should use in every new Mac. Hopefully they find a way to ditch the butterfly mechanism of the MacBook and put this in it, it's SOOOOO much better, I almost don't believe it. :)

In addition to the Magic Trackpad 2 I also tried the Magic Keyboard earlier today in the Apple Store and it was such a good experience, I was surprised by the quality since I expected it to be like the retina MacBook.

My guess is the macbook will keep the same keyboard, b.c that is what allows them to keep it so thin. Flimsy? Mine is anything buy flimsy.

On the first he I did a rant about my MacBook and the keyboard. Keys get stuck all the time, the MacBook was replaced multiple times and the top case also was replaced twice. The geniuses here at the Apple Store are getting crazy from all the keyboard repairs. I wouldn't mind if they made the next version of the MacBook 1mm thicker if that would means this scissor mechanism keyboard would fit.

It's crazy the problems you have had with yours. My first one had a key get stuck, but the replacement has been going strong since launch.

I guess I've been lucky or the people happy with their MacBook keyboards have been quiet but I love my MacBook keyboard and have not had any problems despite having typed about 100 single spaced pages or so.

I'm probably going to get the magic keyboard but I'll also need a numeric keypad for data entry. Too bad they don't make a full size magic keyboard.

Because it doesn't use the butterfly mechanism, but an improved scissor mechanism.
The short travel is not needed and makes it feel cheap. Also can't tell if it's made out of plastic or aluminum. Very disappointing product. Apple gets 0 out of five stars for this one.

Some actually find that the shorter distance is easier on the finger/joints in the fingers, and makes "skimming" over the keys even more speedy. There's no question I type faster on the new Magic Keyboard than I do the old keyboard. Can't speak for the MacBook since I haven't used it enough...

That makes sense if someone has arthritis, but I have yet to meet anyone (in person) who prefers the "cheaper feeling" of the short travel VS. a regular keyboard feeling. I returned my new keyboard immediately because I couldn't find anything good about it.

Conversely, I've yet to meet anyone who didn't prefer the shorter travel of the new keyboard. See what I did there? If you didn't like it, I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong, of course. I'm just going to assume that in Apple's internal testing that more people preferred this key travel than not. Otherwise they wouldn't be selling it, right?
