BettertouchTool is FAR superior to MagicPrefs, and has been around for over a month now.

Downloaded MagicPrefs and a little discreet b&w MM icon appears in the menu bar. Clicked on that and then preferences and opted for three finger click for expose and four finger click for desktop. It works perfectly! I can't believe Apple didn't offer this. I can't see any accidental clicks with 3 or 4 finger clicking. Thanx!!!

update, I changed expose to 4 finger click and dropped the 3 finger click as I sometimes use 3 fingers for regular clicking of links etc. My right hand thumb always rests just to the left of MM so I have to deliberately press all finger 4 fingers to activate expose. Works very well. Some of the other options I've avoided so I don't interfere with my usual relaxed way of using the MM ie scrolling with 1, 2 or 3 fingers etc. The pinch for zoom in and out I couldn't get to work. The big one for me was just expose and a 4 finger click isn't something I'd ever do except to bring up expose. I'm very happy with it. Thanks again.

AWESOME! Yes the Magic Mouse really needs added functionality. I at least need a center (two finger) click to envoke spaces. Can anyone confirm this does that?

Yes it does.

Yes it does.

Thanks, I'm going to have to try this out. I just got the Magic Mouse here at my work on my Mac Pro station and I HEAVILY use Spaces with my video production workflow. Hooked it up the other day and BOOM that was the killer. So now that there is this, all fixed :)

BUT, Apple still needs to build this into OS X and the mouse preferences! Should have been that way on release!

finally got it working, but way too jumpy. the controls seem to be off. or maybe its me. i have it set to two finger clicks (wont even try taps, way too hard) for spaces, 3 fingers for expose, and four for desktop, yet 1 finger clicking brings up expose.

would love to see this executed correctly, but for now this is just not working for me.

Wow, this is awesome. I love it.

Before this came out, I was seriously regretting my purchase of the Magic Mouse.

Its reading your palm.

Seriously, having your palm resting on it can screw up the clicks.

i think you're right. I now have it set for only 3, 4, and middle clicking, as it appears I tend to rest my 2nd finger on the mouse as i'm clicking out of habit which seemed to be triggering it. would love to be able to use all the features, including the taps, but they are way to hard for me to execute at this point. I'd need some sort of mouse retraining.

Also try lessening the sensitivity

I can. It wasn't ready and it was just put out onto the market despite not being finished. They'll get round to fixing it eventually, either through software or hardware revision B. Apple aren't very good at getting things done in a timely manner though, so don't count on it coming any time soon.

I do hope they can get it done ASAP. I HATE third party software for things like this. That's why I prefer Mac over PC. Everything is included. Or supposed to be. I do understand Apple's need to make sure things work. That's also another thing I love about them. But I really hope that they can work this out soon.

Mighty Mouse Still Reigning Supreme

This is precisely why I'm still using my Wireless Mighty Mouse - I like to use the 3rd button for Expose (All Windows), and I squeeze my side buttons for spaces... The not so magic mouse is sitting unused until more functionality is added by Apple. Nothing against this software of course, but no point in me using it since the mighty mouse is doing what I need for now.

Can I use BTT with Maya ? Thanks

yep single finger middleclick, two finger click, three finger click and four finger click work with maya (if you set predefined action to middleclick and add the modifier key you need in maya)

Although the name isn't as nice, BetterTouchTool seems superior as it is more customizable and supports the trackpad.

Is BetterTouchTool Snow Leopard only?

I downloaded it, but when trying to run it, I get "You cannot use this version of the application BetterTouchTool with this version of Mac OS X".

Now if only they'd find a way to turn the trackpads mouse curves linear or better yet, switch from relative coordinates to absolute...

With all these high-tech multi-touch control-surfaces, we should not have to sweep our cursors with a broom toward their destinations.

Til then, it's a Wacom, I guess...

Yes. SL only, and no Leopard version is coming.

jep sorry, i don't have the time to make a leopard version (and i like using the newest stuff ;-))

But consider upgrading to snow leopard it's cheap and in the meantime most bugs were fixed.

That's OK, I can't upgrade yet due to problems with Quark XPress and Snow Leopard, but I'll check it out when I can use SL.

Gave it a shot after using BetterTouchTool and wasn't very impressed. After quitting it once then re-opening it the program was not detecting the motions. Two finger swipes for instance would still work as a back button very frequently for Safari even though I set it to Expose. Restarting didn't help either. Looks like i'll stick with BetterTouchTool for now even though I really like the UI of MagicPrefs better.

If BetterTouchTool was out a month ago, why didn't anyone who is complaining today take the time to email the TUAW braintrust to request a Page 2 article for that utility?

My guess is that the MagicPrefs developers are better at marshaling resources to get the word out about their product (to Giz and TUAW) vs the BetterTouchTool developer.

At the end of the day, I'm just looking for something to enable (re-enable?) Expose with the new Magic Mouse. Unfortunately, until some of the music and photography applications I'm running are updated for Snow Leopard I can't use BetterTouchTool because it's SL-only. :( At least MagicPrefs works on 10.5...
