Mountains
As many are, I’ve long been a fan of the Scosche Magnet plate mounts, as well as vehicle-specific magnet mounts like ClearMounts to keep my iPhone easily visible when in the car.

In planning for the iPhone X, I’m wondering if anyone has yet solved the likely issue users with metal plates on their phones will have when trying to charge with Qi wireless chargers.

I’ve read that the metal plate could get hot because it coducts some of the electricity from the Qi charger, and I’d like to avoid risking any damage to my case, phone, etc. Is my best bet just placing the mounting plate above the coil in the case, or can I slap it right on top of the coil without worrying about charging/heat issues? Alternatively, would I be better off placing strips around the coil as long as they don’t overlap?

Thanks to anyone with insight.

I use a magnetic mount in my car too, but I was under the impression that I will have to give that up if I want wireless charging? I think the metal plates will interfere.

My magnetic plate is installed on the bottom of my case and does not interfere with wireless charging. I suspect if I moved up the magnet to center of the back of the iPhone, it would cause an issue.

Have a look at this video...

It explains a few interesting things on wireless charging.

• Some magnetic cases will work, some won’t.

• Wireless charging can work if there’s a gap between the handset & the charge pad.

Plus many other bits of info. Hope it helps.

This is something people can experiment on with their devices. I use a big plate on my iPhone Plus but maybe I could get away with a smaller plate when the X is released and iFixit shows us exactly where the coil is located. Although to be honest I don't hold my hopes up.

As an avid user of the Spigen magnetic car mount and vent clip, I really hope that they and other companies come up with a solution to this problem. Someone on another thread mentioned the possibility of creating some kind of magnetic ring to put in the case that may allow wireless charging through the hollow area. I have emailed Spigen to request this, but I realize it's a long shot. Hopefully more users can ask for this kind of feature.

It is definitely possible. The old Nexus 5X had magnets built right into the phone on the perimeter of the charging pad that actually helped to hold the phone to the right position to charge. Someone just needs to make a case and associated mount with the magnets on the periphery where there is no metal in the way of the charging coils

Mophie has cases that allow for this now with their ChargeForce products, so I am sure it is doable. I have the mophie ChargeForce vent mount in fact that does Qi charging, and plan to try this out for sure. I think, although am not positive, that their cases work with this mount by placing the magnets that are in the case, around sort of a perimeter. At least that is what I found when trying out these cases with my Galaxy s8 and found that I was still able to charge the phone with the case on and use Qi charging.

I’m planning on having an in-car case for my magnetic mount and then just swapping it out each/every time until I have an alternative more permanent solution... I’m not sure if anything as practical as the magnetic solution will exist though :(

Scosche is releasing a new MagicMount Charge that has both the Qi Charging, as well as the magnetic attachment of the phone. I currently use the MagicMount Pro, but saw this and may consider it. Though I personally love having my phone in landscape mode when I drive. I know I see Uber/Lyft and regular drivers in portrait mode. I'm so used to my old-school Garmin, which was basically landscape, so I've gone with that ever since. Maybe one day I can change I suppose. http://www.scosche.com/magnetic-phone-mount-and-qi-charger-for-car-home-or-office

Found two products that have both magnetic mounts and wireless charging. Reviews are mediocre for the wireless charging pad.

I turned the Spigen plate sideways and stuck it to the bottom inside of my Spigen Thin Fit case for the X. Case appears to still fit ok, except the tiny lip goes flush to the iPhone screen at the bottom. Driving with it can only be attached portrait now, but it held well. I don’t have a wireless charger to test, but the plate should be out of the way of the coils according the ifixit tear down pics.

Hmmm... looks like the Xvida has gotten some pretty good reviews on Amazon. This might be the solution I was looking for.
