I think the new L-shaped MagSafe plug offers worse protection than the older model. The old one you could pull on the cable from any direction, and it would come off easily. The new one, if you pull it in the direction that the cable exits the "L", it will pull and turn the laptop around until the angle is large enough for the charger to disconnect. This could be enough to pull the laptop off the table.
