Yes but as someone who uses a lightning to hdmi adapter for my projector, I am forever comforting my equipment around so I can have the phone charging on a pad and still use the lightning port. This will be much better.

But you can already use a charging pad and and HDMI adapter today.

So this magnet-puck doesn't add any additional functionality in your example.

Well thanks for taking the time, but it still doesn't answer the question why is it any better for the end user. The growing Qi market is a side business, and indeed, I would like to see corroborating growth stats that would evidence such a drastic departure in the future. From where I see it Qi is growing but still not that popular.
So what do you think now that Apple has shown at least some of how the MagSafe charging AND cases / add-ones are going to work? I had a distinct feeling that they were going to go beyond just charging using the magnets. I will likely buy one of the wallet add-on‘s, as that seems like a brilliant piece of kit that will allow me to reduce my wallet down to the minimum and pocket it when I don’t want it on the iPhone. But I am equally interested in seeing what other manufacturers do with it. Can’t wait to get an in-car charging holder, so I can stop dropping into one of my cup holders.

I do think it was a cool showcase and I'm indeed curious to see how it will play out in the field and with repeated use. I don't want to be a contrarian for the sake of it, but I don't want to be an early adopter either. I'm more intrigued by the camera improvements but I'm sticking to my 11 Pro this year.

Just wait till they drop the battery cases using this new tech and it can charge wirelessly through the case!

How is this a “wireless” charger? If this is wireless, then so was MagSafe on MacBooks.
Magsafe had metal contacts.
This is contactless and will charge through a case.
I suppose inductive charging would be a better name for it though.

I will be interested to see if this means they will have external batteries that work with this.
It could be why they've done it this way.

I have a great idea: you connect a cable to the phone via a small hole in the phone and that cable is connected to the wall which delivers electricity over the cable at rates much faster than this supposed wireless charging. It’s an incredible invention let me tell you. I call it a “plug”.
Yes, we are all familiar with wired charging but the point of wireless is convenience. Pluging a phone in is easy, but if you have the phone say on your desk and pick it up and put it down countless times a day having to unplug and replug each time (or not plugging back in and thus not having it always fully charged), is a hassle. Or say you are in a car having to plug and unplug is much harder vs having a wireless charger. Or if you are in bed and want to pick it up to check it for something and don't want to have to manually unplug and plug each time. As you can imagine there are countless scenarios where wireless makes things easier. No no has said wireless can do something wired can't its about convenience.

However, their have been down sides, such as if you go to bed and its not on the right spot, you might wake up to find its dead. While stand up chargers help greatly with that, MagSafe sounds like will resolve that issue for good. The other big issue is charging speed. Initially, it only allowed 5w, which is much slower than wired speeds. For many use cases that may not be a problem, but for times when you need to charge fast, its a pain. 7.5 helped slightly but still much slower than usb-c fast charging. With the newest phones being able to charge as 15w, is a massive increase. Still less than wired but now that difference will be much less noticeable and hopefully eventually they update to support the same as wired speeds aka 18w or 20w.
