Hey guys
Just to let you know a french media (01net) has tested for a week the 12/12 Pro and they measure charging times if it's an important point for you.

Charging time 20W wired 0-100% (12/12Pro) : 1h39
Charging time 15W Magsafe 0-100% (12/12Pro) : 3h21

Given no power brick and a dependant short 1m cable linked to MagSafe, I don't see it as an attractive option but it could still be a viable solution if the short cable or slow speed doesn't matter to you.

This is actually pretty relevant. I quick charge my phone quite a lot.

when one of my lady friends wants to spontaneously hangout, and my phone is on 30%, a 20 minute shower & get dressed combo while my phone is fast charging yields great results.

this happened yesterday. Went from 26% battery to 72% in a little over 30 minutes.

I’ll still use wired for now until MagSafe becomes better.

To get rid of the port apple will need to make sure the speed is faster by next year. Will see.
IMO 2021 is a bit too agressive to get rid of the port. I really think they will get rid of it more likely in 2022 if Magsafe adoption within 2 years is good.
And they probably will cut it on all models. I don't believe rumors saying just one model would be portless. They have to be 100% sure on this. They did not cut the jack on just one iPhone 7 in 2016.
My 2 cents

For comparison, how long does a 7.5w wireless charger take? The ipad 12w brick. 5w wireless charger? 5w brick. It would be nice to see the comparison.

Apple is smart offering wireless charging with this new Magsafe - they sure got a lot of us to buy into it.

But reality is, nothing currently will ever replace direct wired charging.

Since I am never in a hurry to charge, I always charge my 2 iPhones on a dual Qi soft mat overnight - everynight.

I'm thinking with less heating of the battery during charge (7.5W), the phones will last longer??

I don’t see the port ever going away

direct data transmission is still important
People said the same about the floppy and CD disc drives, and headphone jack.

Like it or not (I'm ambivalent as long as what replaces wired charging is not inferior to what we have now), at some stage there will be no ports.

I'm not at all surprised. First of all. 15W on ANY QI charger is measuring the power draw between the adapter and the QI charger... NOT how much power is being delivered to the phone as one might expect.

Furthermore, we KNOW that QI charging under the best of conditions loses about 30% to heat. This means that the 15W QI charger can be expected to deliver ~ 10.5W at most to the phone.

I just charge wirelessly at night on my Anker wireless charger when I sleep. I don't care how long it takes. Anything during the day is wired. An iPhone without a port is still a bad idea. Not for wireless charging speeds, but for data transfer. All of my songs and photos are on my Mac and it takes FOREVER to sync wirelessly. Sometimes it takes so long that I just cancel it and plug it in. Granted this isn't a common thing, but still, wireless data transfer speeds suck.

I’m not surprised. I typically only use wireless charging overnight so it doesn’t really matter. If/when they remove the port, they’ll need to improve it.

Charge with the slow 5w brick over-night. Neither my work SE or my 11 Pro has dropped below 100% health. I'll stick to that. I do have an 18w fast charger if I do ever really need an urgent quick charge, but I've only needed it a few times.

Neat! Thanks for sharing! I'm not terribly surprised. The peak voltage is nearly double when you go from MagSafe to direct. I'd be interested in seeing a comparison of a 15W (5V/3A) wired charge with MagSafe to understand the efficiency loss trade off for going wireless.

MagSafe might be good for somebody at a desk at work where you don’t need a speed charge
