For years people have talked about a port-less iPhone and my biggest question mark is what they would do about CarPlay as the vast majority of cars require it being wired and it’s not like cars have a short lifespan.
has anyone tried MagSafe with CarPlay? Does it work?
Not being able to connect to car play would stop me upgrading so if port-less is going to be a thing Apple will have to have a solution.

Like you stated carplay will not work unless the phone is plugged in via a lightning cable for most cars. You would have to buy a 3rd party carplay wireless adaptor to be totally wireless and use magsafe in your car, otherwise the phone will notice magsafe and the cable are being used at the same time. The result would be the phone disabling magsafe/Qi charging and only use the cable.

I have the same issue, having recently bought a car which can only do CarPlay via a wired connection. I was initially concerned that the lightning to USB-A cable wouldn't work, but apparently it will, but not fast charging (obviously). I think the wired CarPlay is a transition technology which will be phased out over the next few years as most new cars include wireless CarPlay as standard. I know you can get adaptors which plug into your cars USB port and create a virtual wireless network within the car so you can connect wirelessly. Some people swear by them, other people swear at them! But then you still need to plug something in to charge your phone, even if it's a wireless magsafe charger.

It seems a bit silly driving a car where I don't need to take my keys out of my pocket to start it, but have to plug my phone in with a cable to use CarPlay. I'm not really complaining though, because our last car only had a CD player, and I had to retrofit a Parrot bluetooth adapter to get music from my iPhone, which as buggy as hell - so having any form of CarPlay feels like I'm living in 2035!

I've just bought a Skoda Yeti which has CarPlay, though it was never activated from new, so Its costing me about £130 for the pleasure at the Skoda dealer.

Ouch! That sucks. Just make sure you don't lose one of those new fancy keys, our new(ish) Citroen C4 Spacetourer only came with one key.. cost no less than £330 to get a replacement! Fortunately the dealer we bought the car from was extremely decent and paid the full cost - but we've since taken out key insurance... o_O

Anyway, back on topic.. CarPlay is totally worth it though - literally transforms the driving experience. Is it wired or wireless in the Yeti?

It's wired.

If Apple wants to move away from the lightning port, they have to provide a solution for the millions of cars that need it. They cannot brick all of these cars infotainment systems without providing a solution. They will end up selling this accessory and making more money on it.

They would almost certainly sell a 'Wireless CarPlay Adaptor' for a snip at £139..

I got the carlinkt wireless adapter for CarPlay, and got a magsafe holder with charger, works great.
2019 Jeep Cherokee.

Another vote for CarPlay2Air/Carlinkit if you want wireless CarPlay (and maybe prepping for the portliness future!). Works great on my 2019 A-Class as was recently updated to work with MBUX. Steering wheel controls still work well with little lag, and much easier than plugging it in all the time.

I have one of these and it works great for me as well. Car is a Toyota C-HR with factory OEM wired CarPlay.

So the Satechi "MagSafe" (not official MagSafe, but still works like Apples but no fast charging) works great in the my car, Audi A6 2020. Strong magnets och I like the fact that the cable is black. Now I just need to find a black skin for the white charging area. Got in on sale $20. Put som Gorilla tape on the back of it and everything is still rock solid.

So are you connected wirelessly to CarPlay or via the MagSafe? My f150 doesn’t have wireless CarPlay, have to use the USB A connection and it works great, however, would love to use a MagSafe connection only. Is this possible?

You'll need one of these to convert your car's factory wired CarPlay to wireless CarPlay:

Then you can use Magsafe for charging your phone in the car.

Anyone know if there's a UK equivalent to this please?
Amazon UK?

Ok very cool, thank you. This is super helpful. Is this the only game in town or are there other comparable models?
I've only tried this model, but there are others on Amazon. Haven't had any issues with mine. I do use it in-line with one of these just in case I need to turn it off or reboot it for any reason:
