The new MagSafe Charger and 20W USB-C Power Adapters arrived early. MagSafe requires minimum 20W

Edited to add: Whoa, it weakly sticks to my iPhone 11 Pro’s back right where the charging coil is. I didn’t expect that

Thanks for sharing. I thought my 18w iPad Pro charger would work... guess not. I’ll just grab a 20w adapter to make sure.

Was just going to say the same thing. 18w were on the Pro 11 phones.

I bought a couple of apple 29w USB C a few years ago on clearance. Guess I will use that

I wonder if 20w is *required* or just highly recommended. You'd think 18w is close enough. Wouldn't it charge just a little slower?

Depends on the guts. It may not charge if it doesn’t detect 20w. Although it also will Qi charge at a much lower wattage so that may not be the case.

Thanks for the heads up OP. Bought the charger since even Anker has theirs for a bit more. Might as well get the official one before it sells out.

Great point. Mine doesn't come until November some time, but hopefully someone will try it and share the info.

do you have any other magsafe accessories like a case? Curious how much ‘removal force’ is needed to take the phone off the charger. Too much and you’re making it less convenient.

Curious, what is the diameter of the MagSafe charger?

I don’t have anything to measure mine with at hand but it looks like approximately 2 inches.
I was thinking that because I’m not using the magnetic Apple case, that I could use a metal ring inside of my Peel case for extra stability with the MagSafe charger.

I charge my phone and watch on a Belkin 2in1 style dock I got from Apple 2 years ago, can’t justify buying a new one even though I like the look of the new MagSafe stuff.

I guess I’ll order a 20W charger then was hoping to use the 18W iPhone/ ipad Pro charger. Or maybe I’ll just use my MacBook charger

My guess is that if you want the full 15w you need a 20w. But 18w charger will probably still get you far more than the 7.5w you get from Qi. But always possible Apple will not have it charge at all if it doesn't get 20w.

Can you provide the edge-to-edge measurements of the MagSafe puck? Curious if it'll fit in/over an existing hole I've drilled in a desktop for another Qi charger. Thanks!

I'm sure Apple's is fine, but I am more inclined to buy something like this for even less and that has folding prongs (for this style outlet).

Edit to add: tbh, for myself I probably wouldn't buy a USB-C charger that was less than 60w at this point. The size is still really small, and it gives me the flexibility to use it with any of my devices, including my 13" MBP.

Agreed, given that you can get quality 60w+ chargers for close to the same prices as lower wattage, and USB-C intelligently adjusts to the device being powered, it seems silly to buy lower wattage USB-C chargers.

I had to goto the Apple store today to return a solo loop and I picked up a MagSafe charger as well. I’m ultimate going to wait for the Duo Charger but I primarily bought the puck to try this. (See photo.)

Im using an Apple 18w charger and in this use case it seems to work fine. The puck isn’t that heavy but it does stay on the table. I was worried it would be so light it would pull it down the back.

I did drop my 12 Pro on it for a moment and it did seem to charge though I didn’t wait to see if the percent went up. I’d imagine 18W is fine if you use it in “Qi mode.” My guess is 20 watts is only required for MagSafe charging.

Just had a chat with Apple support, they confirmed 18w charger will work with 15w MagSafe charging.

My iPad Pro came with an 18W charger. I suspect that probably also works fine. I think the only reason Apple don’t mention the 18W charger is that it’s no longer available and has been replaced by the 20W charger. If the 18W charger does in fact work then Apple should be more clear about that so those who already have an 18W charger don’t necessarily have to buy the new 20W one.
