Apple's new iPhone 12 models are equipped with a ring of magnets in the back that allows them to work with a range of new accessories, including a new magnet-based MagSafe charger that snaps right onto the back of the device.

Apple is creating a line of magnetic accessories, and third-party companies are also working on useful new accessories that will be able to take advantage of the magnetic system. One company that plans to make use of that magnet ring in the iPhone 12 models is PopSocket.

PopSocket, which makes a super popular line of Grip accessories that attach to the back with adhesive, told TechCrunch that it is working on PopSocket products for the new iPhones.

PopSockets will support Apple’s MagSafe technology, TechCrunch has confirmed — meaning you’ll soon be able to pop on and off these ubiquitous iPhone accessories without worrying about the sticker on the back losing its adhesiveness over time and needing a rinse.
Though PopSockets confirmed it has MagSafe products in the works, there's no additional detail available at this time nor do we know when the first MagSafe-based PopSockets might launch.

But the way you hold it between two fingers is more than likely to cause the thumb, pinky, and ring finger to "push" out from the PopSocket by accident. At least that's how I imagine I might use it.
How strong is MagSafe? Seems like this will come off too easily.
I imagine the magsafe pop socket will have a bigger surface area base that attaches to the phone, something like the surface area of the magsafe wallet, and the round pop socket will extend out of that. Magsafe seems very strong, and the bigger surface area base should also keep one’s fingers from pushing the pop socket away from the phone. I don’t know what you mean by the thumb pushing it away though. Unless your thumb is putting (unreasonably) tremendous pressure on the screen, it shouldn’t go anywhere.

I don't use these PopSockets but I would always put my magnet between my iPhone case and my phone because I refused to put the adhesive on my phone/case. I think MagSafe iPhone was truly a (small) but genius idea.

Pushing out isn't how you separate a strong magnet. You slide or rotate them out of alignment. Something you're unlikely to do unintentionally.

This is actually a pretty genius use-case for MagSafe on the iPhone. I for one am for it! I hope the magnet is strong enough to instill confidence in people holding their $1000 mini computer by a little ring though..

Wait a minute...

The magnets might be strong enough to hold the charging puck onto the phone... but are obviously weak enough for you to quickly and easily remove it.

But we're to believe that the magnets are strong enough to hold a PopSocket?!?!

I don't buy it.

If anything... I'd imagine them making a charging puck that was somehow able to charge through a normal sticky PopSocket.

I have been a PopSocket user for the past couple years. I swear by them both to improve grip and to slot into PopSocket phone holder in the car while driving.

My biggest complaint about them hasn’t been adhesive getting weak, it’s that in some instances they have been insanely difficult to remove, and they leave sticky gunk on the phone.

Psyched that they will have MagSafe versions, how soon can I get one?

Personally not worried about magnet strength. I’m not waving my phone around by the PopSocket, I usually am also gripping the sides of the phone anyway. After I get used to it for a few minutes and see how strong it is I can adjust my use. Should be fine for me.

Can't help wonder if MagSafe has been something they've wanted to do for a long time but the glass screen wasn't drop proof enough. I can imagine a lot of these phones getting dropped using this magnetic holder.

The phone probably has weak magnets, and the charger probably has weak magnets. The pop socket could use really strong magnets. The Belkin car charger is probably has much stronger magnets on its end too.

It would be great if the popsocket could do pass through charging as well.
Not really needed if you can just pop off the pop socket to charge and pop it back on.

I really wonder what happened to 'electrons moving in a magnetic field'. How can they have all of these magnets all over the place? The battery, the CPU, the radio waves... I'm not getting the physics of it all.

I imagine there's some type of magnetic shielding around the critical components; for instance, the material "mu-metal" is good for "guiding" field lines through it, and effectively isolating materials & components inside from the external magnetic field.
