I still have a Retina MBP, and magsafe works perfectly.

The flimsy cable of the charger problem is independent of magsafe, Apple can make good or bad chargers regardless of magsafe or USB-C.
Then you must be only using MagSafe on a desk, never in bed or on your lap.

It's independent, but that's not the point. You pretty much can only buy legitimate MagSafe chargers from Apple, and USB-C chargers are plentiful from other sources. A MagSafe charger costed $70 and can get destroyed quickly, a USB-C charger costs $20 and never breaks.

Magsafe wasn't prone to cracking, it was prone to being abused by users. I, nor my staff had a single magsafe adapter fray, crack or fail in any way. Dozens. It was predictable, which of our customers would have failing adapters. Try washing your hands more folks. 😆🤮 Maybe wipe your hands after using hand lotions.
.

Then why did they have to redesign it to version 2?

I use it almost exclusively on my lap on the couch or in bed. Yep it falls out sometimes if I move too violently. A small price to pay for not accidentally smashing my laptop. I did have one charger that fell out too easy, so I took it back and they gave me a replacement, problem fixed. Maybe that's what you're experiencing?

And yes, the existing magsafe chargers have flimsy cables. That isn't a fundamental problem with magsafe, that's a problem with Apple's charger design. I'm guessing/hoping the new magsafe will use the existing USB-C bricks, but with a USB-C to magsafe cable, then you can continue to use your $20 third party chargers if you wish, and all you have to change is a cable. Or put a USB-C to magsafe connector on the end of your existing charger (they don't exist yet, but third parties make connectors for all these options, so they'll be out shortly after the Apple product). Either way, you'll be able to continue using your charger.

The only problem I ever had was a couple of the cords selling outside of the strain relief at the Magsafe connector end. Likely because of too much flex stress and, hopefully not, but possible electrical issues. My M-I-L had one adapter cord actually burned a bit. The Apple store said it wasn't covered any longer, but swapped it anyway. I was grateful.

I expected the port to be plugged up with gunk and shreds of metal, having worked around many manufacturing clients, but never had it happen. It worked really extraordinarily well. To have Apple just trash it was shocking. They *should* have just put it int he public domain, and allowed other manufacturers to use it too. I think it's that much of a good thing. Beats the heck out of having to replace a motherboard because a socket has been wrenched from the main, or internal power board. It just makes sense.

They should have put it up for a new standard!

Good....there was something very satisfying watching the little amber light turn to green.
And what was very unsatisfying was enjoying my MacBook only to notice there was no light illuminated due to the MagSafe plug accidentally disconnecting due to a slight move of my MacBook. I'm thinking it's charging when it's not.

Curious, perhaps the MacBook Pro is not gaining mag safe charging, but adding in wireless mag safe so the MacBook Pro can charge other devices. This would line up with the recently discovered patents.

I think this timeframe would be WWDC.

It's nice they can announce things on their own timetable and not have to wait on Intel.

A 16 inch machine with MagSage, MX processor, better screen, USB 4...sign me up.

The Touchbar did not make me drool
But MagSafe was so safe and so cool.
With an Mx-series chip
that runs fast, cool and hip
bring MagSafe back and then Apple will rule!🍸😹

PLEASE for the love of god, leave the brick-end of the cable USB-C. MagSafe power adapters fraying at the brick-end were the bane of my existence.
How about both ends and just create an adapter. TBQH it’s just a waste of resources. Apple shouldn’t even be wasting engineers time on this.

It was time 😊
Plus new Thunderbolt display and maybe, in our dreams for now, a router?!

THE WORST decisions combination they could EVER make —— switch to a USB-C-port-only design on 2016 while the world had almost none USB-C adoption, then reduce its emphasis on USB-C on 2021 while the whole world finally embraced USB-C.
I’m glad they did a whole sale switch. They should just stick with it. Don’t be going back in time because some fan bois got way too attached to outdated technology.

Finaly!
From practice i seen so many dropt macbooks because of that USB-C that cannot detach when you accidently catch that cable. But with magsafe it is not the problem, it just detaching and falls out - macbook remain safe on table.

I liked MagSafe for the safety on the pre-retina MBPs, back when they were heavier. Retina ones are too light, meaning the magnet has to be very weak, meaning it always falls out accidentally. And the new MBPs are even lighter.

Also sucked having to buy those chargers with flimsy cables from Apple only, but maybe that's the point.

This. I don't think you could yank my old 5.5lb MBP off a desk by its USB-A ports if you wanted to. But MagSafe was an important part of keeping that beast off the floor (where it probably would've left a mark, despite its "magical aerospace-grade aluminium chassis")... But if the goal is a wafer-thin M_ variant that might be <2lb, at some point the magnet strength is never going to be weak enough to break free, anyway.

If they can make the engineering work, fine, I have nothing against it - presuming USB-C is still part of the cable path somewhere. Ultimately, though, one port to rule them all > proprietary connections IMHO.

Mmmmm... dongles... sexy... chic... what side do you dongle?

That's clever. Here's pretty much how mine has looked since I bought it 3+ years ago. Guess I'm not a "pro" and I should just use an iPad.

This is great news! So glad I waited to upgrade my 2015 MBP. Looking forward to the new design. I hope the 2021 MBPs offer eGPU support. Only a little bummed I will never have the chance to see if I like the Touch Bar or not.

Bad move IMO to bring the Magsafe back. I had 3 computers with it. A white MacBook in 2006, an Air in 2011, and a MacBook Pro in 2013. All of them got shredded to bits. Super horrible cords. And the magnetic mechanism often needed a good cleaning. Since then, I've had 2 computers with the USB-C charging port. The 2016 MacBook, and the 2020 M1 Air. The cords are perfect. The performance of the port is perfect. The port is available for other uses when I don't need a charge. The computers are also so much lighter now that the MagSafe would probalyb knock it off a desk anyway.

Not a fan of this "rumor" at all! I hope its false.

I've been using my 2014 MBP for the last six years. I mostly use it on the couch, in bed, in a recliner, etc. The MagSafe cable gets disconnected all the time as I fidget around or as my gf accidentally hits it. In this time, the charging cable has frayed and I've had to replace it 3 times.

That said, I still think it's worth having. The number of times it's saved my laptop from being yanked onto the ground is too many to count.

Ideally, the USB C ports allow people to continue to charge the laptop as they are now, so people can choose whatever works for them.
