Can the Magsafe leave imprints on naked iPhones? I used mine for the first time today on my iPhone 12 PM and noticed a circle has formed on the back glass after a charge. Is this just a temporary mark or? What has your experience been?
Can you post a picture?
If it is then yes he should return the phone. Unlike the cases I am not aware of Apple making any statement saying that using the magsafe chargers will damage the surface of your phone. That is probably a permanent mark. I would return the phone.
I have a feeling we will see more complaints about MagSafe damaging the back of the phone. If it is then yes he should return the phone. Unlike the cases I am not aware of Apple making any statement saying that using the magsafe chargers will damage the surface of your phone.
It looks like a scuff but it’s not. It did wipe off with a bit of effort.A couple of questions that I haven’t found the answers for...
1. What is the mark? Eg can it be wiped off? Is the glass scratched? Is the glass discoloured?
2. What is causing it? Eg impact, abrasion, heat or something else.
I’m also surprised that we haven’t seen more of this issue (case or not) on Mac Rumours. But maybe we will soon.
With repeated MagSafe charging, I doubt people will be able to wipe off the imprint. I predict Apple will change their MagSafe warning to include naked charging very soon. Even if they do that, they could still face some angry customers who will end up suing, even though Apple warned ahead of time.It looks like a scuff but it’s not. I agree. After a while i think it will have a permanent imprint. With repeated MagSafe charging, I doubt people will be able to wipe off the imprint. I remember now what it reminds me of! Back when I had the iPhone 7 Plus I had a UAG case with some sort of rubbery interior that had a honeycomb pattern. My phone was in the case for about a month when I took it out to clean it. And to my horror, which I had posted about somewhere on this forum all those years ago, there was a honeycomb pattern imprinted into the aluminum and it would NOT come off. I tried soap and water (very carefully) and I tried a microfiber cloth. Nothing. With repeated MagSafe charging, I doubt people will be able to wipe off the imprint. Yeah, I think you are onto something. Unless folks have lots of sand in their environment, I don' think these marks on the naked phone are abrasions. I think it must be some form of residue from the Magsafe plastic. Possibly outgassing when it heats up. It should come off with the right solvent (alcohol most likely).I remember now what it reminds me of! I think I even tried a pencil eraser at one point. What finally removed it was isopropyl alcohol and a cloth and my husband’s sturdier hand doing the work. He had to work at it to get the marks off. They were the result of some sort of chemical reaction.
I had since run into the same issue on other brands of phones and other TPU cases and seen complaints on Amazon of the same thing occurring.
The complaints all kind of died out when phones went to glass backs
I am also reminded of what happens to my electric skillets. So far in my nearly 25 years of marriage I’ve had about four that I’ve desperately tried to make last well past their prime. When I first got them, they were great and nonstick. Then after a few months a ring forms where the heating element is and you gradually lose the non-stick surface in a ring over the heating element. So there’s always a circle of food that will burn over the element unless you stir constantly. Eventually the surface gives way to an unsightly ring that is a combination of damage to the surface itself and burnt on food that only comes up with a lot of effort and baking soda and vinegar.
I am not saying the two scenarios I speak of in any way describe what may be happening here. It just reminded me of those other instances of dealing with patterned markings.
Why a health warning ??If anyone else has this issue, it needs to be publicised and Macrumors might pick it up. These magsafe chargers seem to damage anything they come in to contact with and need to carry a health warning. I wonder if it affects the AirPods Pro battery case as i was going to try and charge mine using magsafe.. I might try it and see what happens. If it marks it then i shall insist that apple replaces it.
It was tongue in cheekWhy a health warning ??
Are you planning on keeping the phone more than a year, or are you on the yearly upgrade program?Ok i left it to fully charge, and i was able to wipe the marks off. I didnt expect them on a first charge tho, and wonder how this will look after 6 months of usage, i dont plan to wipe it off everytime i get it off the charger, just not convenient. Well will see i guess
I buy the new model and pass the old one to a family member. Are you planning on keeping the phone more than a year, or are you on the yearly upgrade program?
Well thats good to hear, mine is also pacific blue altough it looks like graphite in the picture hah. How long have you been using Magsafe?Yes this happens. But the mark wipes off easily (on my pacific blue at least)
