I don't have growl installed, and no bundles in mail and I'm having issues after restoring (both Mail and Safari) and downgrading Safari...

here's a screen shot of library>mail... I don't see any bundles?

Installed Safari 4 Beta on a 10.5.6 MacBook with Growl and it crashes mail

Uninstalled it by using the utility on the Safari 4 Beta distribution called Safari4.0BetaUninstall and got Safari 3 back and all is OK

My daughter who has less apps installed but still has Growl is not seeing the same issue so I suspect that it is the interaction of more than just Mail/Safari/Growl

I had to delete the growl plugin from both /Library/Mail/Bundles as well as /Users/<user>/Library/Mail/Bundles

Working now.

I just reverted back by using the uninstaller package and that cleared up my issue. Growl is still working for me. I liked Safari 4 too!

I also finally got my mail program working again correctly after having deinstalled Growl, Safari 4 and whatsoever and installing Safari 3 again. The 64.000 dollar question is: Do I now give Safari 4 Beta another try ...??

just chiming in with the same problem. i'll wait a couple of days to see if the growl people will release an update, meanwhile i'll check gmail using the browser....

Seems that Mail.app works fine on my machine (so far) after installing Safari 4 beta... I do not have Growl installed...

A Possible Solution!

I had the same problem a you guys, but after booting in Safe Mode (hold down Shift when booting) and running an app (for me, Adium which had been crashing) and then booting normally, everything's fine! Maybe this will work for some of you?

Happened to me (first post here for this reason)

Fixed by disabling growlmail, stopping growl, uninstalling the Safari 4 beta, restarting, restarting growl, re-enabling growlmail

No problems now, plus I use firefox for everything anyway

Also, Hi everyone!

I just had my Mail crash just once. After that, its running fine. I do have Growl and GrowlMail installed.

Here's what I got from Console after the crash:
Code:
2/24/09 1:00:19 PM Mail[2130] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'WebKitThreadingException', reason: 'NSData* -[WebArchive data](WebArchive*, objc_selector*) was called from a secondary thread'

Yes - this seems to be caused by GrowlMail. Moving ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail to another location works too - you won't have Growl notifications for Mail, but all other Growl notifications will work.

Moving it will allow you to put it back easily if you decide to go back to Safari 3.

I only installed GrowlMail a couple of weeks ago so I can live without it until the Growl folk release a fix.

Awesome, worked great for me. I'm sure the growl folks will have this fixed in no time :). Thanks for the help mate.

Beta releases are basically for beta testers and not for general use. I never download a beta. Well that's not exactly true because I did download the beta for Picasa which I haven't had any issues with it. I like it better than iPhoto and besides I am more familiar with Picasa having used it on two windows laptops.

That's wonderful but has no relevance to the thread.

I just safe booted and launched mail, and its still crashing.

same problem

I had the same problem, deactivated Growl but that did nothing to help. I wasn't able to devote any more time to it, so I uninstalled using the uninstaller (which is a bit convoluted, since when you run it it says it's going to install the uninstaller and asks you to accept a license), restarted and have not had a problem since.

Same problem but disabling then removing (moved to my desktop temporarily) the growl bundle has cured mine.

I actually changed GrowlMail to summary only myself and now I see that's the workaround! Nice to know I'm one step ahead :)

Removing Growl and other bundles from the following locations did it for me.

/Library/Mail/Bundles
~/Library/Mail/Bundles

Oh Jesus Christ, why I am so dumb downloading Beta software from Apple ... Will totally uninstall Growl now and hope that this works.

EDIT: Still the same sh*t ... Man, I don't have time for this! Any chance to use my time machine backup? The fault probably is hidden in some folder I don't know ...

If you use the UNINSTALL package that came with the beta, it will uninstall. LOL. That's what I did. All I did was uninstall the beta, unfortunately reverting back to Safari 3, and my Mail started working just fine.

There's some kind of bug in the new Webkit that makes it crash with Mail, apparently when you have GrowlMail installed (usually). I wonder what the other factors might be...

I got the same problems with mail. The thing is I rarely use Safari – Alas, I shouldn't have jumped at the upgrade. I changed locations for .mailbundle and it works fine. But, I want my Growl back. Will uninstalling Safari4 put things back to normal, or do I have to restore from my machine's last backup?

Uninstalling Safari 4 and putting your Mail bundle back into its rightful place will/should fix it.

I had the same problem on my machine as well...

I opened up finder, and clicked /library/mail/bundle and deleted the only folder that was there (growl)....

restart mail and it works great....

this was after disabling growl for mail in both the preferences menu, and within mail itself (stopped send receive)....

hope this helps....

exactly, thank you so much, this helps :)

Possible Fix

I had the same problems with Safari 4, Mail and Growl involved. I fixed it by moving the com.apple.mail.plist out of Library/Preferences/ to a different folder. Restarted Mail.app, worked...So I moved the file back to revert to my old preferences...sill works.
Maybe this helps for some of you, too! I did not do anything with the Growl Preferences neither did I deinstall Safari 4!
