Fix that works

hey there,

after messing around all day with my mail and growl, i also found that the safari 4 beta(!) is responsible (OS X 10.5.6 on MB Pro).

solution if you want to have growl running and those new shiny features in safari don't impress you too much:
-download the safari install package, there's an uninstall package included.
-run this
-afterwards you're back to the latest safari 3. something version
-now delete the growl mail bundle from user/library/mail/bundles
-download the install package for growl (google it)
-reinstall growl mail from the extras folder

now everything should run smoothly

good luck!

Slightly different work-around

Hi - if you want to stick with Safari 4 beta, simply disabled growl from within Mail.app prefs and that seems to stop further crashing. This leaves Growl still running for other apps/notifications. I still have Safari 4 beta running, and no mail crashes for almost 24 hours now.

Of course, to do that you need to go offline so that you aren't receiving any emails otherwise you just crash again. Hope we get a Growl update soon; I hate being growless when it comes to email!

Temporary fix that fixes mail AND growlmail, so you still can use it WHILE still using Safari 4 Beta:

Kudos to MegaMan!!

Peter Hosey is the Lead Developer at the Growl Development Team. This is his blog and his explanation of the issue, with temporary fix. They stated they hope to have resolved for the Growl 1.1.5 release.

I had the same issue, however it only specifically affected my MobileMe email. If I quickly took MobileMe mail account offline in Mail.app as soon as it opened then it would remain open and not crash, as soon as I took MobileMe online again it would crash.

Removing the GrowlMail app from the Growl preference pane as well as the growl bundle from the two Library/Mail locations seems to have solved my issue. I never really used growlmail anyway (it would randomly not work anyway!!) so it's no great loss for me.

Interesting bug though, but this is the idea behind public Betas, none of us can complain at all, any other way would risk this bug not being discovered until it was formally released and then people would moan!

Thanks for the suggestions guys, you've solved my issues and I'm happily enjoying Safari 4...so far I'm very very impressed!
