my mail is very slow to open. mail downloads fine but when I try to open an email to read it it sometimes takes 3 or 4 minutes to down load.
I have tried all the suggestions listed here and have talked to Apple on the phone. They have taken over my computer and tried everything but nothing helps. Situation is the same. takes ages for the body of my emails to open. Help!!!!

I recently noticed, that some of my Mail plugins have caused lots of troubles with Mail. Mail preferences, General, Manage Plug-ins. Disable any which are used and restart Mail. See if that helps.
If that does not help, may be recreate new index might, but by now we are getting in voodoo of Mail.app fixes...

Under General there is no Manage Plug-ins. Only have Extensions and I do not have any Extensions. I have Monterey 12.5 Your message took 2 minutes to open!

Is one of the mail accounts a gmail ccount? If yes, remove the folder "All Mail" from being exposed through IMAP.

I have 4 mail accounts. Two are gmail and two are with my service provider. Gmail is now the carrier that my service provider uses to handle their mail. I don't quite understand what you mean folder "All Mail" from being exposed through IMAP. How do I do that? Sorry but I don't know what you mean.

There are 2 places with settings:

  1. Open Apple Mail.
  2. Click Mail>Preferences.
  3. Click the Accounts, Junk Mail, or Viewing menus.
  4. Update the settings.
  5. Under the Advanced IMAP Settings check wether INBOX is selected.
Open Gmail in a browser window and login (you have to do this for every account)
  • Select the Settings gear in the upper right corner and open All Settings. Adjust the settings in the different areas (General, Labels, Inbox, etc.)
  • Under Labels>Spam uncheck the "show in IMAP" box
  • In your Gmail IMAP settings, set IMAP Folder Size Limits to only sync folders with 1000 emails or fewer.
  • check wether Auto-Expunge is ON.

No such heading "Advanced IMAP" Settings".
Your email took 4 minutes to open.
Went to Gmail No change. Mail still won't open in a timely fashion

Advanced IMAP settings

EDIT: Are you using some Antivirus? Uninstall it.

Click on the Apple menu and select About this Mac. Click the Storage tab and then select Manage> click on Mail in the left-hand sidebar. Underneath, you’ll find out how much space attachments are occupying, select and delete all attachments you no longer need.

Are these POP or IMAP accounts?

I suggest creating a new user. Login as such. And configure Mail adding your accounts one at a time, to check wether it user account and/or mail account related.

Folks have been complaining about Apple's Mail.app v. Gmail for some time now.
(just sayin'...)

We had this issue with Mac Mail Client and we did the following. It has fixed the issue.

Create & use App Passwords
1. Go to your Google Account. https://myaccount.google.com/
2. Select Security.
3. Under "Signing in to Google," select App Passwords. You may need to sign in.
4. At the bottom, choose Select app (Mail) and choose the app you using > Select device (Mac) and choose the device you're using and then Generate.
5. Follow the instructions to enter the App Password. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.
6. Tap Done.

Mac Mail Client Configuration
1. From the menu bar in Mail, choose Mail > Add Account.
2. Select your email provider from the list as other mail account, then click Continue.
3. use 16-character code (app password) instead of google account password press sign in and it would end up with asking IMAP/SMTP settings.
4. set IMAP and SMTP as follows
-Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server: imap.gmail.com
-Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.gmail.com

Last few weeks, Mail app VERY slow to download content of emails. The emails show up right away in the inbox list (From, Date Rec'd, Subject, etc), but no preview in the split screen, and no content even if I click and open it. After 3-5 minutes, everything works fine.

I've seen other threads about this, but no real fix. I have 3 accounts (1 Hotmail, 1 Gmail, and 1 Edu linked to Gmail).

Thank you.

If you tried Mail rebuild feature with no luck, then you can remove/put somewhere else a folder in ~/Library/Mail , called "Bundles".
Also, you may try disabling the accounts one by one to find a culprit

Have tried all suggestions listed above and nothing has worked so far. contents of my emails still take minutes to open.

Apple Mail on Monterey 12.5.1 over the past week was taking about a minute to open with a spinning beach ball. Was driving me nuts. I searched these forums and this thread and post is what solved it for me. Of course this is after I wasted time rebuilding all my mailboxes which did nothing except reduce the mailbox size in my Library folder.

The first thing I would suggest you is to check if there is any update available for Windows Mail app. To do this Select the Start button, and then from the apps list, select Microsoft Store. In Microsoft Store, select See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.

Hope this helps :)

Do not use the Windows Mail app. I use Mac Mail app. Have tried everything everybody has suggested and nothing has worked. Have had Apple try three times. Nothing changed. Even after i have read an email if I go back later to read it again it will take minutes to reopen.

Mail preview can slow down the Mail app, especially if you have many messages with a lot of information. The app automatically previews messages from your inbox, convenient when you are scanning through but not always necessary – especially if it causes some performance issues.

To turn off Mail preview, all you need to do is position your cursor near the vertical line that separates the message list from the preview window. It will change from the standard arrow into a slider arrow. You can then click and drag the pane all the way to the right and get rid of mail preview.
