Only?

Doing a bit of googling it seems since its release, Valve has sold an estimated 4 million units, that's pretty impressive imo.

Valve never intended this to be a primary gaming device but rather a complementary product. They were not trying to take market share away from windows

Why are we suddenly talking about sold units? We were talking about Steam market share. With Windows still having 94.84% on Steam Valve spending millions of dollars for many years has given them, yes only, 3.05% and Apple doing nothing has given them 2.11%.

Apple is not trying to take market share away from Windows either so what’s the fuss about them doing nothing despite the many things they’ve done since the release of Apple Silicon? Apparently doing nothing or everything doesn’t matter much since we’re only looking at Steam survey and not other improvements Apple has done for Mac gamers and developers.

Apple's 2.11% steam market share is based almost solely on people owning a Mac for 'other things' such as work, hobby, audio, video editing etc and then also playing a game or two now and then.

It's completely different to windows (and Linux) gamers who buy a 'gaming PC' exclusively to play games.

I'd argue that 2.11% is pretty reasonable considering Apple don't make gaming hardware at all.

I feel I have betrayed the people of this thread. :p

I just ordered the parts for a new gaming PC build. The last one I built for myself was in 2012 which I sold in December 2023. I had it for 12 years and kept upgrading the GPU to keep up with times but kept the same/original CPU (an Intel Core i7-3930K). I also got my first Mac around the time I sold my old PC. I've been exclusively using my Mac (a MacBook Pro 14" with the M3 Pro chip) for 2 years now as my only computer. I don't own any gaming console and wanted to get something that would allow me to play games "without any restrictions." Thus I landed on getting a new gaming PC.

This new gaming PC will be exclusively located in the living room hooked up to the TV and sound system. I will use my MacBook Pro 14" for daily/everyday usage and use the PC only for gaming.

Specs of build:

Note that I got an RX 9070 XT instead of an RTX 5080 because my TV, which is a Sony X95K, has issues with NVIDIA GPUs. Currently, Sony TVs have an HDMI issue with NVIDIA GPUs where black outs and other "mishaps" occur randomly. AMD GPUs don't have this problem so that's why I opted for an AMD GPU.

Congrat, may I recommend you pop over and visit this thread: Flip Flopping between macOS and Windows

That's a really nice build, I've had good experiences with my AMD GPU. I've mentioned this before the ray tracing isn't something I do, and as such that had put AMD on near footing with rasterization - at least at the time of purchase for me.

I will say that its sad to see the price tag of your rig, just a few years back a comparable class of components would run you 1,000 less. Given how prices are going up, and fast, the sooner you purchase the ram and storage the better off you'll be.

True, RAM and storage prices have gone up recently.

The Steam Mac client is now fully Apple Silicon native so you don't have to use the beta anymore.

The Mac version of Control is really well optimized. And it is compatible with HDR too. I really recommend it.

I don't have Steam installed on my Mac but if I download the DMG installation file from Steam, info says "Kind" is still Intel (for the DMG installation file).

Yes, it's confusing. I had the beta and when I switched to the stable version in the settings it downloaded and installed the client and then said "Universal" in the info window and showed "Apple" in the activity monitor. I never downloaded the DMG file from the website.

Now I tested to download the DMG and moved it to the Application folder and it said "Intel". When I quit the client and started again it says again "Universal" in the info window and shows "Apple" in the activity monitor.

I think it's because it's a unversal app. In the info window you can choose to launch it with Rosetta so when you download and launch it the first time it starts with Rosetta since I have it installed. Then the second time the ARM64 app takes over in and starts.

No, it's just that they forgot to update the DMG with the Universal version. The first time it runs it probably updates itself.

But they didn't forgot. They just didn't give a f...inger ;)

I guess they will have to do it before macOS 28, so in their view... they still have time.

Interesting that they think Apple Silicon and their Mac port is worth mentioning in the presentation. With 35 million sold copies Cyberpunk is their main source of revenue. Hoping for Witcher 4 on Mac and M7.

Still no sign of Hitman WoA on macOS... I don't get it. The iOS version has been out for months. Did the developer expect higher sales on iOS? That game must be an awful to play with on screen controls and a tiny screen.
Also, porting to iOS generally takes longer because you have to adapt to mobile.

That’s probably accurate considering we’re likely to see an increase in Linux usage due to w10 going EoL and plenty of disdain for w11. (And switching to Linux doesn’t require buying a new PC)

Well, for whatever it's worth, I switched to macOS full-time after being a decades-long DOS and Windows devotee. Following Windows 8, and especially after the release of Windows 10, I resolved to never again allow Microsoft's pathetic excuse for an operating platform to touch my personal systems.

Although Linux may be an option for some, it's less of a cohesive product than a confused hodgepodge of projects, the ideas for which often don't work well.

Ultimately, for me, Apple's offerings were the only viable alternative on the desktop.

Dunno. But played a bit of Hitman 3 via crossover and it was a good time.
