If you are getting the printer with your apple computer, I recommend Canon Pixma series, because the Inks are cheap if you get third party. I also recommend looking at meritline.com good source of cheap ink. Downfall for the inks you have to take out the chip of the cartridge and put it on the third party ink, nothing hard just little effort on your end.

External Hardrive and Thumbdrive combo, must have honestly I talk from experience that I lost alot of my designs from using Zip Disk that sucked.

It seems this may be your first apple computer, this sucks because you will have technicalities because you wont know how to touch the system, might recommend reading up on a book for technical more detail stuff.

Get a cover, and sleeve for that laptop you decide to get, even work on customizing it during the summer make it look koo for school.

Question:
I just finished college done my four years but I am going back to community college to get Web Design/Programming certificate and going part time, can I still get that student discounts and Developers membership?

You 'might' not need a macbook pro, but I still think you should go pro if you can. Sure, a macbook will do the job, but its like asking someone why buy a lexus if you can go from A to B with a Corolla? Sure they are the same, but the 'ride' on a mbp will be smooth (true, not as big a difference) but with the extra screen estate, nicer keyboard (subjective I know), lighting, cooler looking (looks do matter), and a graphics card to boot.

I really liked your analogy here! I also just wanted to say thanks for the positive support. :) I really do feel better about my thoughts/wants in this situation when I read replies like these.

They are right. YOu need 2gb. :D

but to be serious, forget what everyone says about you not needing this and that. If it'll make your life in college easier and more convenient then get it! For all those ppl who say you don't need 1gb ram, that processor, that much hdd space, because the cheaper, less resourceful dells would be "more than enough", then ask them why don't ride a bike to work.

haha! Your reply made me smile and laugh a lot. Thanks so much for your input, scan. :)

I'm a graphic design professional; I was working on a 15" powerbook until recently when a cup of coffee killed it (not my fault). I've been doing a ton of reading on the MB/MBP "issue", and frankly I'm about 90% certain that I'll be replacing my powerbook with a macbook (NOT pro). I figure the price difference will net out to about $500-600, and I've been told constantly that the macbook will handle everything I can throw at it (for my needs).

This was interesting to read considering you stated that you're a graphic design professional. Knowing that you're very close to getting yourself a Macbook and not a MBP kind of shows that even the people that might actually really NEED it don't prefer it or want it, you know? Thanks for your reply too!

I don't know much about printers either, but I just did a quick search on newegg and found this HP for 50 bucks. You don't need something expensive, so that, or anything similar, would work fine. The only think I'm not sure about as far as the Apple printer rebate is whether you will be able to use it along with the iPod rebate or if you can only use one of them. If you can use both, then definitely do it, but if you can't then you have to decide which one you want to use.

Ah, I see. I guess I'm going to do a little searching for myself. I'm not too sure about the printer rebate thing with Apple either. I just know that a friend of mine got a printer with her Macbook when she picked her's up last August for some reason. She might've just entirely bought one at the time.

Actually, it's funny you mentioned reading up on the OS and such because I had planned on going by Barnes & Noble later on in the weekend (or next week) to check some things out. :) I'd really like to pick up a few good books about Apple if I can just to have... so, if you have any suggestions I'm completely open! I know more about the computers than the average person who switches, however. I think that's just from doing a lot of research online, reading forums and using friends' computers. I'm going to look into covers and sleeves as well. :)

My friend is graduating with 40,000 in student loans, I am graduating with no debt. Think about it.

Well you've left out some critical information. Did your friend go to an Ivy League school? How much did your friend's parents contribute? How much did your parents contribute? If your friend has $40,000 worth of debt, would $40,500 have made a great deal of difference? What is your friend doing after graduation? If he/she is going into a high paying job, I don't think that this debt is as big of a deal as you are making it sound.
Used laptops are a good idea, but I just can't let myself buy a refurb or a used product...something about a product that has been faulty in the past, no matter how well tested, tells me that I shouldn't get it.
The OP has worked to save up for his mbp, and I think that if he feels it's better for him (as do I, based on what he's told us), then he should get it. Better to get what you feel will be better for you then try to take a short cut and then regret it later.

Thanks for the defense, CalBoy. I'm a girl... I didn't know if you knew that or not by your usage of "he" or if you were just speaking in general terms, you know? haha. :) I think a few people aren't aware that I already have more than money needed to buy this future machine even though I mentioned it a few times. Oh well, sometimes things just get looked over.

I was speaking generally, but now that I know, I'll refer to you as "she" and "her":)
I think most people haven't bothered to read your full "situation," and as such, they are giving you general, as opposed to specific, advice.

If I recall properly,I can confirm that I have personally seen apple give the free iPod mini/nano promo for the past two years. Before that I wasn't really into macs, so I don't recall. I'm pretty sure they'll do the same thing. And if they don't , buy the iPod anyway! It's the world's best music player!

You will need this amount of power because:
A. If you buy a Vista PC you will need it because Vista is way to power-hungry
B. If you are keeping it for five years then you will need room for it to "grow" or lag behind.

I have a thread saved for threads like these.

My MBP is lovely thread! Gosh I love that thread! :)

after thinking some more heres what i would do. buy a cheap/refurb mbp or mb cd and in 2-3 years buy the new model. your first year in university is really not that demanding. take the savings now buying refurb and plan on getting a new one in a couple years.

thats what i would do personally if money is at all a concern. if not just get the mbp now. seems like you are wondering if its overkill. well if youu dont have an issue with spending an additional 500 go ahead and get it

if you do find money is a concern, you will find the mb is a very very capable machine

I love threads like those too! I'm saving it for myself as well. Thanks for sharing. :)

Hi,

I got through college and universtiy using the computer labs. Knowing that I had to finish my work before the lab closed forced me to complete my projects and not pull all nighters. Between studying, papers, socializing, and my 2 jobs I was forced to learn time management.:)

If you foresee that money will be tight it would be wise to see what the labs are like at your school. They will be busy, but that ebbs and flows depending on time of day. I know, I know. I sound like a wet blanket, but $2000 is a lot of sandwhiches over 4 years.

If money isn't going to be a problem then buy whatever you WANT.
