Now I can sleep with a smile on my face...

By the way, I think it being lighter and thinner are almost given. They didn't want to make it explicit, because they were ashamed of the weight and thickness of the previous gen iPad. In fact the later is the major reason for this fast update.

Update: I was wrong. The iPad 4 is still heavier and thicker than iPad 2. Lucky these factors do not bother me much.

This is ridiculous. 7 months between hardware revisions!?

The iPad 3 should have been held back, because performance on it with the A5X was always below that of the iPad 2 with the A5, and they clearly knew that capable hardware would be available later in the year for the iPhone/iPad 4.

I love how on the ipad site, under features, the title for the A6X says "Powerful A6X chip. We doubled down on performance." I guess they realized what a joke "double down" was.

Wirelessly posted (iPod Touch)

Sold my iPad 3 a week ago. Didn't know this was in the works though. Now I'm really glad I sold it. Waiting till Monday to buy the 32gb Nexus 7. Just returned a 16 gb Nexus 7 this morning when I found out they'll be selling a 32gb unit for the same price as the 16. I liked my iPad, but I'm done with Apple tablets. I'll keep my iPhone and Apple TV.

Why are people pissed about this? Your iPad3 is still perfectly usable. It's not the newest thing anymore, but it's just as useful as it was an hour ago.

People get mad if Apple is slow doing updates. Then they get mad if updates come faster, because their toy isn't the newest anymore. There's no way to please everyone. Technology moves on. It's kinda silly to get upset over it...

Looking forward to a price drop on the iPad 3 and then getting a slickdeal by having best buy match micro center or Frys. Picked up the iPad 2 on iPad 3 announcement day when they also released the price drop and micro center went down to 359. Man crazy refresh cycle and glad I stuck with a cheap iPad 2 that my toddler took over

This update means nothing to me because the New new-iPad will not be jailbroken for some time. I'm perfectly happy with mine!

I'm thinking they wanted to take advantage of the mini iPad release and refresh the iPad at the same time. It makes sense that in the coming years the iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone, iPod, and any other iDevices will probably be updated in or around October. Also, it makes sense to have everything use the lightning connector ASAP.

It's not a 7 month life span. It's just 7 months being the newest thing. Did it suddenly stop working when the announced the new one? I really don't get it...

makes perfect sense to move the product launch to this time period, allows for right before holiday season rather than after.

more people are disappointed when they release a new one in march/april and what they got for the holidays is now old news.

There's is a bug difference between slowing down updates and speeding them up. A 12 month cycle gives adopters especially upgraders of each revision a little bit of certainty. 6 months cycle out of the blue is frustrating to say the least.

For example, do I dare buy an iPad mini now or will it be updated with all the glaringly missing features in March or April? Should I sell my iPad 3 and upgrade to the 4 or again the uncertainty of 6 month cycle kicks in again.

Apple have created an uncertainty in some of its most avid of supporters / consumers.

Has it made my iPad 3 redundant, no of course not.

Does it still feel like a kick in the balls after they advertised flagrantly about it being 4G in my country only for it to never be so, and then replaced 6 months later with one that is.... Certainly....

Had this been a minimal update (lightning connector support) I think people would have shrugged it off. But increasing performance, battery charge times improved and graphics performance alongside Proper LTE etc.. It's a tough swallow, and again leaves me conflicted. Yes I want those upgrades, but not if they again are outdated in 6 months time.

I think my biggest irritation with all of this is what was the point of releasing the 3rd Gen in March and settling with the A5X if the A6 was so close? In reality, they should have done a soft update of the Ipad 2 (seeing as it's sticking around and the 3 is getting tanked) and held out to dub this "new" ipad the official "new" iPad. Oh well, I still enjoy my 3rd Gen.

In your case I can understand a bit more, if the new version gives you the LTE you originally thought you were getting. Otherwise, I still stand by my opinion (which is what is is, after all, an opinion). There will always be newer technology coming out. I don't worry about what I have being the newest and best, I worry about it doing the things I need it to do. If the iPad Mini suits my needs, I'll buy it, regardless of whether there might be a new one out in 6 months.

I understand why they updated it. What I don't understand is why didn't they move the iPad 3 to the iPad 2's position? Is it because they can't sell the iPad 3 at the $299 price, or is it because they don't want to sell anymore iPad 3's at all. If so, what does that say about the iPad 3?

Apple products get updated, doesn't mean the old products aren't fantastic.

Still loving my iPad 2 and have no reason to upgrade.

For those that are annoyed, just need to realise that your existing device still works just fine. If you needed it when you bought it you did the right thing! If you didn't need it and could have waited, then you have nothing to complain about.

Personally I think it is fantastic that Apple is updating their products more quickly.

Get over it!

im bummed about this. I would consider selling mine and getting the 4 but I won't bc you can't transfer applecare.

is the iPad 4 heavier then the iPad 3?
