If I wanted 6 to 7 month upgrade cycles I'd go to android. One thing I always liked about the year upgrade cycle is you knew you had the best product for at least a year with apple.

You know, I went into this pretty sure I was going to get an iPad Mini. But now that they also did a bump on the regular iPad, I think I am just going to go with the 4th Gen iPad. That A6X is going to scream, and I don't care if the mini doesn't need anything faster than the A5 to push its screen. That A5 will show sluggishness in certain apps. Not to mention the Mini not having retina is a huge deal breaker for me.

I would def get the iPad 4 over the mini. IMO mini is pretty pointless. It would make sense to me for $200-$250 but at $329 with no retina screen idk. I rather pay $500 for the ipad 4.

A few weeks ago I fell down my stairs while holding the iPad 3rd gen, which had a plastic shell and smart cover, but it cracked during the tumble on carpeted stairs from 2 feet when I lost my grip, stopping 2-3 steps later, resting against the metal railing.

A pea sized chip appeared on the glass next to the edge with fractures spreading half the ipad. No Dents. I thought, thank goodness I bought AppleCare+, but dang, $50 deductible and using 1 of my 2 replacements. Never dropped/cracked the iPad 1 or my iPhones over the years.

Haven't had time for an Apple store visit with an appointment to replace it. By the time I do they'll probably have the 4th gen in stock with the 3rd gen not selling. Now I'll feel like I'll be under suspicion of doing it purpose in attempt to have it replaced with a newer version (which the warrant says can happen). I'm sure they'll have to have some old 3rd gen for replacements still.

Not to say I'm happy about there being a 4th gen so soon. But I knew there was a chance when the cpu wasn't really upgraded from the iPad2.

I wonder if the new Ipad cycle is now in October/Nov. So in that
case the regular size Ipad won't be updated in March/April.
What else would they do make it thinner, lighter in a few months? I will wait until Spring
and see what happens.

This is probably the new iPad release schedule. We won't see a 5th gen iPad or 2nd gen Mini until next October.

We said that in April but 6 months in, here we are ;)

Hahahahaha. Its actually funny.

Hey, Im still on the iPad 1, so dont complain about having a great iPad 3.

Im gonna buy either the 4th generation iPad or the Mini (but it has A5, which is old).

same here. I have the 1 and think i'll get the 4th gen now. I was tempted by the mini, but a5 chip and 16gb killed it for me.

I wonder how this will affect the battery life as (I'm assuming) there's no change in the battery capacity with now a faster a6x. If it's anything like the iphone 4 --> iphone 4s upgrade .... then it might be worth it to hold on to the 3rd generation for a while until reviews come out for the 4th generation.

Laughing real hard

You "I have to have the latest and greatest" types kill me. Unless you are going to sell your PERFECTLY GOOD iPAD 3 at a considerable loss, why would there be a good market in ebay? If I was in the market, I'd just wait till the new one comes out. You will line up days in advance to get the new ipad (while playing on your old one). I hope it rains or snows while you are in line. :D

I don't know if this anything more than a minor spec bump. Maybe I'm in denial as an iPad 3 owner, but if you even look at the design of the iPad mini, it's ahead of the "iPad 4". The iPad 4 still has the old body design of the iPad 2, where as the iPad Mini has more of the unibody aluminum chasis look of the iPhone 5. And the Mini has that much-vaunted "diamond-cut chamfer", instead of that old rubber gasket in the regular iPad. I'd imagine next year's full-size iPad will be a complete body redesign that will get it more in line with the unibody designs cutting across Apple's product line.

In fact, if you compare the "Design" pages of the iPad Mini and new iPad on Apple's sites, the iPad 4 looks dated in comparison. So honestly, I don't think iPad3 owners should feel that bad. It makes perfect sense for Apple to align their refresh cycle for the whole iPad line.. and they're definitely pushing their users to migrate to the (seriously much better) Lightning port. Next year, I'll be considering an upgrade to whatever full-size iPad comes out. But for now, I don't see this as such a big update or a slap in iPad3 owners' faces. My iPad3 hasn't run any slower since this announcement (though iOS6 hasn't helped much!)

I like my iPad 3 a lot, but this quick turn around to a much more powerful processor makes me think they knew the A5X was slightly underpowered for the retina display, but they didn't want to get another 6 months behind in the tablet market. It's pretty uncharacteristic of Apple. Granted the iPad 3rd gen seems fine with today's apps, but with the high density display and A6X, newer games and stuff are going to have high quality assets that are going to make the iPad 3rd gen chug.
