Intel is claiming the problem is a result of a faulty microcode algorithm leading to elevated operating voltage.

Well I have a 15th Gen i5 and Gigabyte has a BIOS update posted in July2024, so I went through the steps of flashing/updating my BIOS to avoid the issue. I used this link:

How to Update BIOS on Gigabyte motherboard:

Performed on 3Aug24 to Bios version Gigabyte Z790 Eagle AX BIOS Version F3C. Note the board came with Version F3 from 2023.

I didn't think Intel had released the microcode update already. Good to know. I'll see if my coworker (he has 13900k) has gotten the update. Though chances are his chip is already screwed (he ran the full beans profile).

Honestly, in hindsight I can’t say for sure this BIOS update was to address the instability problem, it was not labeled as such and I did not research it. 😳

It probably didn't because the update wasn't released until after you posted that. May want to check again although it may still not be out for some boards.

Yep, there is an Aug 7 update F3D to update micro code on my Gigabyte Board...

For anyone doing this:
  • How to Update Bios on Gigabyte motherboard: https://www.technewstoday.com/gigabyte-bios-update/
    • Performed on 13Aug24 to Bios version Gigabyte Z790 Eagle AX Bios version F3D. I updated Bios because of the issue Intel i5 CPUs were having getting scambled due to power issues. This adds new micro code. I used QFlash method.
      • Download the new Bios from Gigbyte.
        • Unpack it and place on the root level of a USB Flash drive formated to FAT32 (they usually are). Plug this into computer.
      • Restart your PC and press Del/F2 when booting to enter BIOS Setup again.
      • (See RED Below) Press F8 to load Q-Flash and select the Update BIOS option.
      • Select the BIOS update to install and click on Yes if prompted to verify the update files.
      • However, in this article images don’t match up with my BIOS so I did this:
      • Update BIOS appeared as the only choice.
      • Select "file".
      • On the left Column, select the USB Drive. Select the drive at the bottom of the left column
        • For Me: Seen as H:USB (PART1 OF 00000000)
        • On Right Column Select: Z790EAGLEAX.F3D (which is the version of BIOS I was updating to) and the only thing that appeared there.
        • Hit Orange Right arrow at the bottom of the right column that points to the right.
          • Get a message Update BIOS, Are you sure? Select Yes It loads file and then “Press to start”
          • System will shut down and then QFlash will restart.
          • On Restart QFlash pops up, Bios file is loaded and message "Updating BIOS Now" as it counts up from 0 to 100%.
          • Reboot in 4 Sec.
          • Restart> 3 restarts (based on hard drive shutting down and restarting) with a blank monitor. Can be a long delay between restarts.
          • 4th Restart briefly saw Gigabyte icon, then shudown again.
          • 5th Restart got a full start.
          • Message on Sign in: Pin is no longer valid due to security on computer. Setup pin, sign into MS.
