no thanks, staying on ios15
14.7.1 Forever!

What would convince you to update?
It would take Apple making a version of iOS without the obnoxious App Library Ui & accompanying switcher that ruins the usability of the mini. It'd also mean putting out a version of the OS that doesn't add all the new resource hogging bloat every year, so that the device isn't irreversibly hobbled to a slug after updating. The original iPad Pro is still just as fast & efficient to use as it was when it was made IF you don't update it. And given their track record of wrecking workflows with sweeping, poorly executed Ui overhauls du jour, then as long as we have no way to downgrade our devices back from those unpleasant surprises, updating is never a risk worth taking.

They'd need to reconsider their business model to accommodate the hundreds of millions of iPads & phones they've sold us that didn't just wink out of existence as soon as 5 years is up. But prolonging their products lifecycle period only potentially makes them more money long-term with happier more dedicated customers and requires the expense of programming those updates for those devices, whereas cutting off support in shorter lifecycles cuts those costs and guarantees them more short-term money from all the upgraders that are used to throwing working devices in the trash and upgrading when they're told the magic words "vintage" or "obsolete".

Do people realize that Apple has been patching iOS “Major Security Vulnerabilities” since iPhone 1? Hundreds of them.

Do people realize that Apple will be patching iOS “Major Security Vulnerabilities” for the next 100 years? Thousands of them.

Makes you kinda wonder… how secure is iOS? (hint: it’s not)

Nope.

iOS 15.8.2: iPhone 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+, iPad Air2 and Mini 4, iPod Touch 7

iOS 16.7.6: iPhone 8, 8+ and X, iPad 5, iPad Pro 12.9 (2015) and 9.7 (2016)

Kind of crazy to think the iPad Air 2from 2014 is still receiving security updates in 2024…
iPad Air 2 was crazy powerful at the time and for a lot of people will do exactly what they want. Amazing to see an iPad get 10 years updates and I think it's a great thing for sure.

iPad Air 2 was one of the best iPads I ever bought, it was the second 'regular' iPad I moved to after the first gen.

Since they just patched hundreds of security vulnerabilities, it is more secure than it was previously.

That iPad was my longest kept in use apple device. i just retired it this past summer

Ill never understand this mentality
I do. Because when you update, for bug fixes, you'll get new bugs. Otherwise there wouldn't be any bug fixes in an update.

They should separate the bug fixes from sw updates / added sw or emoji type of updates. That way some people could simply download bug fixes without any unasked for sw updates which should result, at some point, a bug-free OS.

I’ve never had a bug in iOS that really bothered me much aside from one that made my watch battery drain and therefore not last a day.

No way. Staying in 17.3.1. I don´t want to update my Apple Watch to watchOS 10.
The best way to avoid that is to disagree with the terms and conditions of watchOS10. I used to get nagged every night and one time it tried to update over night and asked me to agree to the T&C. I said no. I have gotten a nag since and am still happily on watchOS 9. So just disagree with the Terms & Conditions.

Thank you for the information.

Will iOS 16.7.6 be available for iPhones that can support iOS 17 but are currently on a previous version of iOS 16?
No.

I haven't received any more updates to iOS 16 after 16.7.2 because my iPhone can run iOS 17. Instead of providing all iOS 16 users with updates when they're being made available (the latest is today's release of 16.7.6), Apple wants us to upgrade to iOS 17 to help improve their adoption numbers.

What a shame!

One of the benefits of staying on one older iOS generation behind the latest one is for the stability and less bugs.

How long has Apple been doing this consumer-unfriendly practice of not providing updates for an older iOS only for phones can run the current iOS?

If it weren’t for security fixes I wouldn’t update, there are no (new) features of interest for me. YMMV
sloppy coding by apple, their "improved validation" means that they fixed a coding problem. they should have A.I. look over their code for vulnerabilities before releasing a beta to developers to test. crazy that this type of stuff continues to be an issue in todays programming world.

forcing users to update the entire OS for a security patch, I thought we were past this, by enabling a "secure patch" model that let the current OS patch security issues, or were they only able to do this on macOS.

none the less -- apple, stop releasing new Emoji's, no one cares, also, fix your sloppy coding. I continue to see so many bugs of the U.I. and apps that obviously have been poorly programed... eh hem "Home.app", feels like a Hypercard app.

Well 17.4 caused me to lose the ability to control the now my phones audio via the Now Playing on my watch.

Got to say, just updated my iPhone 15 Pro Max and web pages seem to be loading faster & scrolling is insanely smooth with zero stutters even while loading the page. My device hasn’t felt this smooth in a while, I’m very pleased so far.
Safari always feels snappier....

I want to keep the customizable dock that I will lose with watchOS 10. I click on the side button and there are my top apps in the order I want them in.
