makemkv has supported this for awhile now. The issue as you noted are the keys. You still have to pull the keys in order for it to work. Which requires a very expensive piece of software. Unless you know of another way to find these keys?

H264 or h265? If h265 what extension? iTunes will stream 4K to AppleTV in the Computer section? Is there a new icon for 4K that can be set, like HD icon? Does handbrake correctly do Enhanced Dolby Digital 7.1....and can it interpret the newer object orientated sound streams (Atmos) that are on 4K discs?

I’m not attacking, there just isn’t good info out there yet.
itunes doesn't support MKV and you need MKV for HD audio and atmos. Otherwise you're stuck with MP4/M4V. Just use infuse and ditch itunes all together. You still lose atmos with the ATV but at least you can get the HD audio.

I've tried it on my two discs, Blade Runner 2049 and Ex Machina and it works. But, you have to have certain Blu-ray drives to do it - including the Asus BW-16D1HT.
what cpu do you have i read you have to have the new intel core i7

Specs say you need a HD630 (7xxx) or UHD630 (8xxx) and gpu-enabled player, such as IINA, for smooth playback. Of course, if you have a dedicated graphics card that also supports HMacOS video playback software that does frame-packed (native) 3D passthrough to TVs or projectors. HEVC you should be fine, too, so long as you're using IINA. VLC 3 doesn't seem that good for such playback.

Have you heard about any?
I have not. To be honest, I haven't been looking for it lately either. But back in the day there were none.

Haven't watched this thread for a while so just updating, I upgraded by bluray reader to the LG BE16 and tried it on the Stranger Things Season 1 4k bluray I imported from the US. It didn't work with MakeMKV alone but did rip fine when I combined MakeMKV with AnyDVD on Windows. If that information is useful to anyone.

Which drives currently work for ripping?

Combine, in what way exactly?

Thank you for the reply.

I have both. A 4k HDR TV and a 7.3 audio system. I currently use a popcorn hour player to play HD 1080P content from an network drive. I was wondering if by using MakeMKV, does it rip to a hard drive creating the .mkv file which can then be accessed by a 4K stream box like what CloudMedia offeres to play on a 4K TV? Thnx

It can do 2 things:
  • rip tracks from BD (the m2ts files) into individual MKV files
  • create a unencrypted backup of the BD, where files are still m2ts and all BDAV folder structure is maintained.
Both outcomes can be played back from hard disc, the backup could also be burned onto a BD(XL) disc.

Hi guys,

Can these .mkv rips play right from the hard drive as apposed to burning to a disc?
Of course. Which is what everyone who rips does. Using plex makes it super easy and your content is available on every device/tv. And it allows you to stream outside the home. I have many friends and family connected to mine. And well over 1000 movies and growing.

Wow, thats awesome. I cant wait to give it a try. Unfortunately, it would seem considering what I've read I'll have to build a brand new PC. Or is there a laptop version of a disc drive thats compatible with MakeMKV?

Seem there are *all sorts of encyption keys based on the software you use*

For instance, for VLC to play Blue-ray discs, you need these : https://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/

I wonder if these would work regardless or weather MakeMKV will look in its own location.

Any drive will work(unless you're talking UHD, that's a different beast and will require another piece of software to extract the key for makemkv to then rip). You certainly don't have to build anything special. Just find an internal drive for a desktop or external for a laptop. Ripping doesn't need much power at all.
Playing via plex does only if the device you're streaming to doesn't support the format you're trying to play. As plex will then transcode it, using CPU power, to something your device does support. This is good as it allows your content to play on anything with no work needed by you. It can be bad if your computer isn't powerful enough to handle the transcoding.

So we'd need to know more about what you want to play this content on. I play my 4k rips on a ATV4k(infuse), Nvidia Shield(plex) and my Oppo 203(full BDMV rip) without issue. I would imagine the built in app on my LG OLED could do it as well but I don't use the built in apps. None of what I play on requires any transcoding thus a powerful computer is not needed.

If it becomes an issue on the apple tv you simply use infuse as it has it's own built in player and will connect directly to plex server. Problem solved. Plays 4k without issue.

You can get an nvidia shield. It's a streaming device like the apple tv but it is powerful enough to act as a plex server. They say it can transcode 4 1080p movies simultaneously.

But initially you start with what you have and see how it goes.

Ripping a UHD will require a "UHD friendly" drive. Be aware that there are no Pioneer drives that will rip a UHD.

With LG drives, the firmware version is as important as the drive model.

My experience is if you want to play these files as ripped, you need both software for gpu hardware decoding AND a computer that has that gpu hardware. My quad-core i7 2012 Mac Mini cannot play either of the two 4k rips I've made (Blade Runner 2049 and Ex Machina) even with IINA (probably the best app for this task). However, my 2017 MBP (HD630 Intel gpu) and my six core i7 Coffee Lake hackintosh (UHD630 gpu) play these files just fine.

That is quite funny. My UHD blu-ray player plays them back without breaking a sweat. And I am sure, it has no i7 inside ;)

Two things to remember with MakeMKV and MKV container in general:
  1. Dolby Vision ripped off the UHD-BD can not be played back anywhere except on a UHD-BD player with Dolby Vision support. It is so because of that special two-stream encoding required for BD compatibility. Single-layer DoVi clips like those aTV 4K is willing to play, can not be ripped from BD nor has anyone figured out how to convert from 2-layer to 1-layer DoVi stream.
  2. TrueHD + Atmos support is also shaky in MKV container, I guess only a computer can play it back to AVR so that Atmos will be recognised.

That's because your UHD Blu-ray Disc player has its own hardware chip for decoding. Macs use Intel chips, and if you want hardware decoding then you need a gpu that can support it, such as the HD630 or UHD630 gpus on the gen 7 and gen 8 Intel Core processors.

Thanks guys, just installed and configured Plex...it's awesome. One thing though. I have tons of movies that arent in .MKV format. Do you know if Plex will play anything outher than .MKV? If not, is it possible to use MakeMKV to convert my .m2ts, .iso, etc. to .mkv format?

s it possible to use MakeMKV to convert my .m2ts,

Why convert? Plex plays .m2ts files. I'm playing one as I write this. An ISO file has to be mounted in order access the files. If it is a blue ray you have to open the the package which is in the ISO. Best to copy the specific tracks you want to disk so Plex can access them without having to do a mount.

Plex plays just about anything

Not true. Many non computers can play this. Nvidia shield, Chromecast ultra, Xbox, certain year lg and vizio TVs. Disc players. Probably others I’m forgetting.
