Sorry to revive and old thread, (is anything in the PowerPC forum ever truly new?), but...

Can someone recommend an easy way to install, update, or otherwise use the MVPS hosts file in Leopard or Tiger?

Is that the same as the 'hosts' file? The one used to block connections or is it some other hosts file for some other purpose?

After downloading the hosts file, I run this in Terminal to show hidden system files:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

In your hard drive root directory, your existing hosts file is in the etc folder, replace this with the new one - you'll be asked for your user password to complete this.

When done, hide system files by entering this in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

Don't think you need to show invisibles, except if you're trying to get access to the hidden folders. But for that you can just go direct. The files IN these folders are not hidden.

From the Finder, CMD+SHIFT+G (or the Go menu>Go to Folder). Enter /private/etc and press return. You're there.

However, if @jbarley is correct then it's a different hosts file we are speaking of.

Thanks, I'd forgotten about that method.
The MVPS hosts file is the one I use and it works very well, can be downloaded here:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
I'm just trying to figure out what specific hosts file we are talking about.

Inside /private/etc is a file simply called 'hosts' (without the quotes). If you edit that file you can block connections to/from sites. I have only heard it referred to as the OS X hosts file or simply "the hosts file", or "your hosts file".

Now Eriamjh1138@DAN refers to an MVPS hosts file and you link to one to download. Is this the SAME file as the one I just mentioned or is it a special file that goes elsewhere only for Microsoft products? jbarley seems to imply that it is?

Is it just another way to refer to the standard OS X hosts file?

Am I the one who is confused?

I think so. I just download the file and replace the existing one - though it is prudent to save the original somewhere else first.
Ah. OK.

Usually what I do is this:

1. Go to file location and open hosts file in TextEdit (It's just a text file).
2. Make edits.
3. Save as text (RTF won't do) to my desktop. Text edit will want to add .txt to the end which is fine.
4. Delete .txt from the end of the file.
5. Grab file and drop it into the /private/etc location. OS X asks me if I want to overwrite and also that I need to authenticate. I say yes and then authenticate.
6. After file is overwritten, close window and open Disk Utility to repair permissions.
7. Flush DNS cache using Terminal.

That's how I do it. Easier than using PICO or some other UNIX editor. Just have to pay attention to the conventions used in the file.

I've been using the file since around December on my 2011 MPB and my only complaint is google shipping links are blocked. It makes it difficult to research and price shop.

I'm probably doing something wrong and there's probably an easy way it, but.... I'm lazy.

What browser are you using?

There are addons if you are using TenFourFox.

Using TenFourFox on my Quad G5, but my MBP uses Safari.
The link in my signature will help, but I'd suggest on T4Fx to use BluHell Firewall and uMatrix. You can block inside the browser at a granular level.

I know Safari has the option of Glimmerblocker but for myself I prefer an in browser solution.

BTW, anything in that thread of mine also applies to Firefox. It's not specific to TenFourFox.

The seller appears to know what he is talking about, so except for the Quicksilvers, yes, this should work in a PowerMac G4.

Thanks. Shame I have to get one sent over from the USA, as the Post Office set charge for collecting the customs fee (£8) is often far more than the fee itself!
