Aesthetically, the angular and boxy design of the latest flagships looks amazing to the eye. It does bring out the luxury look of the iPhones, similar to the days of the 4 and 4S.

However, it has one flaw that I realise a couple of months ago. I’m a huge fan of having my iPhone looking pristine and clean most times. Fingerprints aside, things like lints and dusts bother me. I had the 13 for a few months since January this year and I realised that whenever I take my phone out of my pocket, the top side of the phone drags a moderate amount of lint from my pocket, smearing it all over the screen. I thought it was my poor laundry habits. I did a few changes and the “problem” persists. Once I realised the squared-off edges were the cause, I changed to the SE and guess what, no lint being dragged on when taking out my iPhone. I got the similar experience from the days of owning iPhones 7-11 PM.

I’ve had the iPhone 5 and OG SE but upon closer inspection, the design is slightly different even if they are based on squared-off design. The platform of the screen is slightly elevated from the chassis compared to the current design where the chassis and the screen meets between a small tolerance. It could be possible that the chassis might be jutting out which in turn drags lint and dust when pulling the phone from pockets.

With a curved edge design, the lint and dusts can “roll off” easily to the side without being smeared on the screen. Assuming the 13 series aren’t packing a special costing on the screen that attracts more dusts and lint electrostatical-ly.

Also I’ve heard about how some people complain that the angular design “cuts” into their palms when holding the iPhones. Especially for the Pro series which has a stainless steel chassis. With my experiences the design makes the iPhone larger than it actually is. The curve design has positive ergonomics factor to it. We didn’t feel much of this issue in the 4/4S because those iPhones were small to begin with. With larger phones, I think having a curve design is more ergonomic than having a squared-off design.

What do you guys think?

Apple kept the curved design from the 6-11 which was 6 years. I can’t see them changing the chassis design anytime soon, which is good because I really like it. I haven’t noticed more/less lint with my 12 Mini… I use an Apple silicone case and a screen protector if that makes any difference.

I am still stuck in the era of curved design. My primary phone is the 11 Pro Max and my secondary phone is the iPhone 6s+.

I have an iPhone 5, I'd love to have the flat sides back. But that's not going to happen until I upgrade my 11PM and that won't happen for another year or so.

I have Psoriasis, so curved, squared, or whatever, when I pull my phone out of my pocket I have to wipe off a series of flakes on the top edge. Changing design won't ever change that.

Perhaps they could do curved sides but flat top and bottom. I remember some old Nokia/windows phones had this sort of design and I liked those.

I like the flat sides. There is a difference in how I pick up my 4, my 4s and my 5 versus my 6s+ and my 11PM. With the flat sided phones I can grab them by the side, but with the curved sided phones I have to grab them between the front and back. Because the sides are curved the device is likely to slip out of my grasp and drop before I can get a better hold on it.

A lot of times with the curved side devices I just say 'screw it' and grab them with two hands. Its annoying but better than dropping the device.

Personally, I prefer the rounded edges from a functional perspective. I find my 11P easier to slip into a pocket, into a slot in my bag, into anything, really. Also much more comfortable to hold. The human hand doesn’t have 90 degree angles and it turns out I don’t want my phone to, either.

When the 12 dropped I thought it was cool that Apple went back to a 5-ish chassis but now having one, I don’t love it. Looks fine, I just don’t like the feel..

Agreed, but the one thing that will likely stay for us for a long time is glass backs.
I agree as that isn’t a design choice - it’s tied to functionality. Until Apple finds a way to evolve MagSafe I think we’re stuck with that.

I had an 8 Plus and now have the 13 = I loooooooove both designs, the rounded 8 and the squared-off 13. Both were and are so handsome I want to use them caseless — I don’t, but want to.

The curved size will come back eventually. Design and fashion are cyclical
Yup, it will probably be back in the next redesign.
It takes only a second for the Chinese to copy whatever Apple design is. Most newly released Android phones are also sporting the flat edges design.

I like the X series design a lot, especially the XS with steel frame, much better to my hand and eye than the 12/13 phones. But I think Apple are the last company in the world to take notice of mouthy users!

The iPhone X/XS are some of the sexiest and most beautiful designed (especially the Silver models) iPhones Apple has ever made. They’re also so grippy in the hand because of the glass backs and stainless steel sides.

I liked the curvy design but the square is kinda nice in a phone case. Especially with the 13PM being so heavy and my small hands.

Turn your pockets inside out before you do your laundry, and the amount of lint in them will go down significantly.

That said... I'm kinda split on this. The squared sides are easier to hold onto and look cooler, but the curvy side design feels smaller in your pocket. I still have an 11 Pro Max so I haven't had a lot of experience with the squared sides but I have a feeling it'll be a toss-up when I eventually upgrade.

With or without a case?
