What if your last name is something like, say, Podrats, and the wife-to-be's name is Jones.

Suffer the poor children.

Yeah, there are several legitimate reasons a man might want to take his wife's name. For example his last name could be that of his stepfather, to whom he is not particularly close. Or she feels more strongly about keeping hers...

Good on the OP and his fiancee/wife for making the choice that's best for their circumstances, regardless of the inevitable negative commentary it garners. (Exhibit A.)

Basically I'm British but live and work (on a visa) in the us. Here's the crux. She is Swedish and we will be getting married in Sweden. I live in Illinois. We are debating about just going Vegas though haha

How did you two meet then?

How else would people know who the rightful owner is?;)

And the acknowledgement that they have achieved the pinnacle of their existence. ;)

Shall we move this discussion to the PRSI? ;)

Ironically, before my girlfriend passed away, I legally took her last name. So, I definitely get it. I just don't see why women should do it "just because".

/thread hijack over :D

She's changing her first name? Why?

Her parents were immigrants. They decided to give her the "Americanized" version of her name. She has always gone by the name they would have given her back "home", so she's changing it officially. So now instead of American Foreign, her name will be Foreign American. ;)

How does a man going about changing his surname in the US when he gets married?

Its so we can keep her swedish name and both have the same surname btw

It will be a hyphenated name :)

I'm from England so not too foreign lol I dont want our kids to have a different surname than both of us and we dont want to lose her scandinavian surname or my surname (family legacy/personal pride lol)

A) Is her lastname Swedish or Scandinavian?

B) What about your family legacy/personal pride?

Is she royalty?

Wahlström. My family legacy continues as it will still be there just hyphenated. And no she isn't royalty but she is pretty damn amazing
