I get the feeling that he wanted to make a statement, then die by police fire. When that didn't work, he went to Plan B and then killed himself.

Then again, maybe he was a very very bad shot.

+ 1 to the old grandma trying to disarm the stupid shooter..;)

failed.....but at least she had cajones..

but i wouln't have done it... unless i was a cop;)

Classic suicide-by-cop scenario. The only explanation for the fact that he missed his victims was that he didn't really have the stomach for murdering a bunch of people. He was angry, unhinged, wanted to make a statement, but ultimately he didn't quite cross over the line from self-destructive behavior into murder.

Mind you, I wouldn't take a chance with such an assailant, but he clearly had his chance to kill and didn't. Anyone could have hit those people from that distance with that kind of weapon.

I don't think the guard necessarily intended to shoot him in the leg either. He probably aimed for center mass and the shot went low. You never try to hit someone on the legs on purpose, that goes against all law enforcement training.

Fortunately, nobody else was hurt.

Was the guard even there initially though? I can think of many of these town hall, city hall venues where there is on site security, perhaps in the lobby, but not necessarily in the room the meeting is being held in. It might have taken that much time for the guard to be notified and respond.

The guard went and put a vest on before he came back and shot him ... saw an interview with the guard.

It was a suicide by cop plan. Glad he was the only one killed.

Do I sense disappointment? ;)

Maybe he was a better shot than you give him credit for?? :p

Everyone's Grandmother can get a vest these days.

Not from me....if he really was trying to kill people he was a shockingly bad shot, especially considering he aimed his weapon very deliberately for several seconds before firing his first shot. I can only conclude he purposely missed. Also, that woman that hit him with the bag escaped with her life; surely if the guy was intent on killing she would have been shot? I'm thankful things didn't turn out worse.

Handgun drills always emphasize aiming for center mass; it is far harder to hit limbs or the head, and it would be better to hit someone in the chest, even if wearing a ballistic vest, than to aim for the limbs and miss. If he's wearing a Kevlar vest getting shot will still hurt, and may distract him enough to provide a chance for a follow-up shot.

Also, if you hit the guy in the legs or arms there's a good chance he can still shoot at you. If you hit him in the chest he is much more likely to be incapacitated. Aiming for the limbs or head is more of a last resort.

There were innocent people behind the target. Always know what is behind your target. I think it was said earlier in the thread but maybe it was intended.
