Just because the new iPhone is water resistant...

Perhaps this played a role in this tradgedy. Everyone is facepalming about the stupidity of this man for using a plugged in electrical device in the bath but anyone can be absentminded and do something completely idiotic that they would normally have the common sense not to do.

As one other MR poster said (s)he uses the iPhone in the bath all the time because it's water resistant. The man in the story may have done the same hundreds of times before, but this time, he plugged it in without thinking.

That's all that needs to be said.

Yes, but sometime before this year is out, half of the people reading this thread will probably do something idiotic and be no worse (thankfully), but had a few things been different, a terrible outcome may have been possible. Even the smartest amongst us are prone to having an unexpected episode of head up the arse syndrome for a few minutes.

I seriously doubt that half the people reading this thread will do something as asinine as getting into the tub with a phone that is plugged into a charger. Two or three, perhaps, but not half. :)

The incident was unfortunate (and preventable).

Does Apple need to put a packaging sticker on phone chargers warning of danger?

No...

It's amazing but a lot of people seemingly go into a "zone" of some sort when looking at/using their phones. It is an addiction like drugs (with professionals who back this up) for todays teens especially and lots of others to be on their phones constantly, like their drug of choice. Mesmerized by the screen and the action on it. Common sense goes out the window. We've all seen videos of texter's falling in fountains, manholes, tripping, crashing cars and generally not paying attention while on their phones. Having said this it's not much of a stretch to take a plugged phone into the bath without a thought because all thought is given to the phone. Very unfortunate for the man and any family picking up any piece of sense of it. We have enough warning stickers already and you just can't fix stupid as it's been tried. I bought a microwave oven once that had a warning sticker stating Do Not Swing on the Oven Door! Unbelievable, but someone maybe did that and got hurt. I wonder if there'll be a lawsuit over this. SMH

This would have helped him.

Disturbing ... May his soul rest in peace...
guys please take care of yourselves and it won't hurt anyone to not use your smartphones for half an hour...
stop being a smartphone addict, value your and others safety first

Indeed. You don't need to be a complete idiot to do something like this (though that certainly helps). Some people who do ridiculously stupid things like this are actually rather intelligent people who have a compulsion and lost their better judgement just long enough at the wrong time.

Well this whole incident leads to a question. What if you spill a drink on your charging phone? Most people would react and grab the phone to save it...I assume. But the best bet would be to unplug from the wall first?

Just a ponderance of the situation that happened.

Seeing as how he died because he had the power adapter and extension cable on his chest whilst using the phone in the tub, I would think grabbing a wet phone and unplugging it would be okay. As long as the power adapter also isn't submerged in whatever liquid you are touching to unplug your device.

It is quite simple, when its connected to the socket, let no water or wet hands get near. Sad to hear. He had to go that way. God's ways.

Spill all you want on your phone. The 5 volts in your phone and in the lightning cord will not harm you.

Spill liquid onto the power adapter while it is plugged into the wall or extension cord, now you should begin to worry. That is where the higher voltage is at, going into the power adapter.

This really isn't any fault of Apple at all, what killed him was the extension cord on his chest getting water inside it that shorted out with him int he bathtub. Remove the iPhone and charger and the same outcome would happen.

Horrible. If charging was really a necessity a cylindrical small battery can be purchased at big box stores two for $20. That's what I would use.

No. No one should ever attempt to bring any sort of power source in the bath that isn't explicitly designed for the purpose, such as some battery powered shavers.

As mentioned previously, you can die from very little voltage and current if the path is right.

What a dark & horrible post!

I am annoyed by idiots as much as the next guy, but I'd draw the line at making a point of pointing out in a public forum, my low opinion of the intelligence of a recently departed stranger.
He probably had loved ones... maybe he didn't even delight in & call attention to the misery, pain, or death of others.

@Matthew.H might feel really clever for posting this; but I find it despicable.

My prayers are with that man's family.

Right, however, there are people who are gonna go what they are gonna do. At least make it as safe as one can and don't light a fire next to an open gas can, so to speak.

Get what you are saying and agree.

But, in the end sometimes the harbinger of death isn't enough to make people NOT do stupid things. Rather, the specter of being ridiculed by others on this forum is what strikes fear into some and would make them think twice about their actions.
