A bicycle is a good idea, but aren't bicycles supposed to be ridden in the street? In that case, they're already using cars. In some places like hike/bike trails, that would certainly be a good option.

What kind of scooter? Moped or mobility scooter? A mobility scooter could certainly be driven on the sidewalk.
I'm thinking of bicycle as lower cost alternative to using a vehicle and an opportunity to getting paid while exercising. Yes, bicycles should be ridden on the streets, however, the bicycle would be slightly closer towards the sidewalk but it should not make much of a difference with the cameras and GPS. I definitely agree with you on using a bicycle on bike trails, whether on or off-trail, which can not be accessed by vehicle. It can sure be implemented into bicycle computer with GPS to help the rider find a bike trail.

A gas powered scooter is great on gas mileage and would cover a larger area quicker than on foot.

I really hope Apple comes out with some sort of superior Street View feature - one where you're not restricted to rails like Gmaps and can literally explore everywhere completely freely using a much more intuitive navigation interface. Not sure how high a priority such a thing would be for Apple Maps though.

As a relatively new driver, I frequently use Google Street View to check out particularly complicated roads/junctions before I set off on a trip (to check lane markings, street signs, etc. so I don't get surprised - the UK's roads are truly terrible in places) and Google's Street View navigation is absolutely horrendous on iOS. Sometimes you try to go under a motorway bridge and it just pulls you up onto the motorway and/or puts you in an infinite spin for whatever reason.

They have it all wrong in the article, this is the new Apple Car Modular or Project Turtle as it is called in a leaked internal memo. The idea is that why drive the Apple Car, when you can carry it? You need to close your rings not sit in traffic. Apple claims that their new Apple Car Modular is the "pinnacle of automotive design and will change the way we use aluminum in cars" -Johny Ive. Brilliant if you ask me!

Will they be tagging the location of outdoor toilets, safe drug-use sites, and homeless encampments?

Apple’s Maps plans don’t seem scalable. It appears they are trying fairly hard. But at their current rate they’ll never cover 80% of even the US’ cities. Is this intended for use when I travel to large cities? Then when I return to my home city of 2 million I switch back to Google Maps so it knows addresses reliably and provides Street View?
They went by my old house a year and a half ago in the van and I did not live in a big city. I doubt they're as far behind as you think.

Apple maps has been fine for me when traveling and local to me, I like how it makes sure you don't get off the wrong exit when they're close by. Have you not used it in a while?

At that pace it's going to take a long time to catch up to Street View.
Most likely it’s not to be street view. Just important long standing business fronts when finding man address? Maybe just for intersections.

Not everything has to copy Google serviced or existing features.

I don't know why Apple, Google and others don't equip USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc with LIDAR equipment on their trucks, planes and employees to get the most accurate maps. It could generate money besides improved usage.

Brilliant idea!!

Well, that would be a quicker way of getting around than car in Toronto at certain times of day.

Very true! Rush our is insane on all major streets!

Or, better yet:
Drone with camera, that captures 10-bit HDR video (e.g. Mavic 2 Pro)

That could work.

Drone = potential for a falling drone = personal injury lawyers following the drones around like it's a pilgrimage.
One way to drain their coffers, even if slow, it’s one foot at a time. Maybe they’ll be late for court and forfeit ;)

Go Apple Maps team! I'm counting on you guys to replace Google Maps so that I can have my privacy back.

I understand these companies are competing, however why not just pool resources and map out cities together. Data is data, how it is represented to the end user is where the competition should start. Think of the carbon footprint through duplication.

Oh Wow Apple is copying Google!

I wonder when the ninja turtles will map the sewers for the curious complete city tour.

A creeper that has equipment of that caliber and cost?

What makes you think it’s really lidar, or even necessarily anything other than some plastic?

Could be some kind of publicity stunt or something. Do we have any proof at all that this guy is actually in any way related to Apple?

I saw a Ford Transit for Apple Maps last week in Irvine, CA.

Funny thing is, the reason I use Apple map recently is that Google map has older data since they had scanned earlier, so there are some incorrect data like missing newer construction and some closed businesses. But Apple did later, so it's kind of up to date than Google in some cities.

So I don't think Google alone can win the whole map market that simply because they have covered once.
