WhatsApp has 100% market share here. We can’t escape 😓.

VHS videos had 100% market share over Betamax which died a death. Now, who uses video tapes? Something better came along and we dumped video tapes.

The difference here is that its the other way around. Rather than sticking with VHS (WhatsApp) until digital media happened (something better comes along), we have to dump VHS (WhatsApp) first.

The more people who dump WhatsApp, the more the market opens up for something better. We have to take the initiative, rather than being a bunch of lazy "users".

The only other business which refers to its customers as "users" is the drugs business.

Either admit you are an addict and stop complaining, or change.

Changing from VHS to other media (e.g. DVD) had very significant and apparent advantage even to the average user. Also, it's not a communication tool so as long as we could buy the player for the new format and we could get the media ourselves, it was all good.

We all know that Facebook is shxt but if everyone else doesn't feel the need to change, I still need to keep the account, especially, WhatsApp has very high acceptance in business usage too due to historical reasons and it being cross platform and tied to phone number. Telegram, although many of us know about it, is simply unknown to most people. So it's not whether I want to change it or not, it's whether other people are aware there are other choices and that they feel the urge to change. People hate changes.

Of course, it takes courage to change. I closed my Facebook account more than a year ago. The account was with many years of photos and communications, but I still managed to do it, mainly because not many people care about Facebook anymore, and no one uses Facebook messenger here except very few business use. I opened a dummy account just in case for some business pages and business chat accounts. But of course, Facebook still can track me via the dummy account. I just try to avoid using it as much as I can. But then they have Instagram, another extremely popular social network. This one I still can't escape yet.

There is still a long way to go for people to wake up about WhatsApp. Well, actually I don't think many people care, even if they are clearly aware that Facebook is manipulating their sensitive personal data. Most people don't even know how extensive the tracking is, or they just don't care. Don't put too much hope in humanity - especially when we witnessed the chaos happening in many places in the world now.

Haven't used WhatsApp since 2014. It's annoying to hear "Do you have WhatsApp?" "Can't believe you don't have WhatsApp" "You're strange, man"

And at work, I have received a work phone and they are forcing me to use it, even though we could all use iMessage or Microsoft Teams to communicate.

I wish more people use Telegram.
But why? Because it has more gimmicks? No E2EE enabled by default is such a huge step back compared to WhatsApp/Signal it‘s like going back to driving cars without seatbelts and airbags.

I will. I’ve used WhatsApp since day one. I was on the fence of leaving when FB bought them, but stayed. This is the end of the line for me. A shame, since WhatsApp is a great multi platform service. So long and thanks for all the fish.
I just did. I've used WhatsApp since before Telegram came out - migrated some of my contacts to Telegram, but not all. But I have had enough of FB. Earlier I sent notices to people who want to stay in touch with me, how to reach me on Telegram, and then this evening, I deleted my WA account for good. I hope more do it, but honestly most people don't even realize WA is owned by FB even though the splash screen says it - maybe the new agreement you have to tap through will help people understand.

Luckily it doesn’t apply to EU. We have laws in Europe

Not entirely true. The data collection still happens, they are just barred from using it to Facebook’s competitive advantage. I am pretty sure they have a way around that otherwise they would let you keep using the app even if you don’t agree to the new terms and conditions.

I moved to Telegram 2 years ago. That was difficult to do as you have to get your friends and family to join. Now I have to ask them again to move to Signal?

Telegram is decent enough and if I want E2EE enabled on private chats I can. I am just personally happy I am out of that Zuckerberg spyware.

Also there are other public groups on TG that I joined and they don’t have a Signal.

EDIT: Oh and I love cloud sync. I don’t think apart from maybe Facebook Messenger competes Telegram in this area.

They'll just play naïve once again, saying something like only wanting to give the users a better experience by removing irrelevant ads; and they had nooooooo idea that some intellectual somewhere would ever think they would merge data/profiles for their own competitive advantage, when all they ever wanted was to provide a good user experience. And surely, isn't the EU the bad guy here, preventing innocent FB from helping individuals by in a responsible manor tracking everyone, to help protect the innocent users from getting non-relevant ads?!

I can't believe people actually use that Whatsapp security nightmare, especially after Facebook took it over.

Signal has always been the one for me.
Just came up in conversation with a friend, I’d been aware of it but it faded to the background, I’m all over it now

That’s because their carriers have price-gouged them for SMS messages and they’ve had to outsource their message infrastructure to an app that Facebook provides “free” (aka in exchange for an all you can eat buffet of data).

Fortunately, US carriers never quite got around to making SMS super expensive so we don’t have to do that.

Careful. You are dangerously saying something nice about US carriers... not allowed here. 😀

(yes, I work for a major US carrier.... SMS costs a LOT of money to maintain. Not free to us.)

Another case of "since we're the land of the free I'm just going to assume a narrative that we are number one"? Like seriously, the whole damn world has pretty much moved on from regular SMS whenever they got the chance to do so; no matter if we get SMS for free for not (and many of us do; free sms and free calls, basically we're just paying for the amount of data that we want).
Or another case of...maybe all parties are acting rationally with the incentives before them?

Given that Whatsapp messages are end to end encrypted, I am unsure as to what data would be shared with Facebook other than your list of contacts and how many times, and when, you have called/messaged them and they have called/messaged you.
Go read the list of what Facebook collects from all their apps. It melted my brain.

I wish WhatsApp would catch up to the functionality of iMessage which is bonkers amazing. But now looking at Telegram and Signal. Social media and google need to be weakened any way possible.

The EU & UK will be looking at this very closely because they will not allow peoples personal phone numbers to be used as a tradable commodity, which is what Facebook will do because they will sell the information to 3rd party advertisers which would mean millions of EU & UK users getting unsolicited text adverts from who ever Facebook choses to have the information.

The reason i say the EU & UK is because they have one of the strongest set of privacy laws in the world.

Yeah that’s not going to go down very well in Brussels is it

That’s true, but how is WhatsApp any easier than Signal? Signal is easy as can be.
I have never used WhatsApp. I am guessing it isn't any easier. Too many people rather go with the flow than think for themselves. Smartphones for those who prefer ignorance and popularity over safety and security of the person and information. Very sad.

The question is not what is collected by Facebook. The question is what can Facebook collect from WatsApp that it is not already collecting through other means.

Choose Facebook. Choose WhatsApp. Choose to justify your addiction. Choose excuses. Choose blaming other people. Choose staying the same. Choose following the crowd. Choose wasting my time responding.

Isn’t SMS just bits of data, like any other bits of data? Seems like carriers charging extra for SMS is double-dipping to me, since I already pay for a data plan.
