The question is not what is collected by Facebook. The question is what can Facebook collect from WatsApp that it is not already collecting through other means.
Even if the list where the same, I don't think it justifies WhatsApp being used, if one cares about privacy. Granted, we can't and shouldn't live in a bubble. At the same time, we should do our best to try and mitigate our exposure and not let companies violate their own terms as Facebook has done time and time again, for the sake of collecting data about us and getting rich off it etc.

A lot of people in this thread are making excuses. And said excuses amount to nothing more than 'mom, the other kids are doing it.' In my opinion, that isn't a valid reason nor is it sensible reason when our personal data is at risk.

Isn’t SMS just bits of data, like any other bits of data? Seems like carriers charging extra for SMS is double-dipping to me, since I already pay for a data plan.
That's like saying that emails are just bits of data; but running servers with email server software, and caching emails, is expensive. And even more expensive in jurisdictions where the law states that all (meta) communications data must be stored for periods of time.

So SMS doesn't just happen, it consists of a lot of servers and storage and extra negations about what data packet goes where and when. It's an expense. Not a major one, compared with everything else, but it is an expense more than just any other bit of data.

I've finally deleted WhatsApp , sick and tired of everything that touches FaceBook.

Signal is perfect for calls too.

Some of my friends abroad use Telegram , it's great for messages but I can't find a way to hear incoming phone calls. There is just a notification but no ringing as in a classic call .

Does anyone here know how to fix that ? Any help would be appreciated .

EDIT : Nevermind , it's working now ! I have no idea why ;-))))

Just deleted my WhatsApp account, and am using Signal and Telegram. Signal audio call quality seems good.

I've found that many more people are likely to switch to Telegram as it simply looks better, more bells and whistles etc - it essentially looks like WhatsApp with extra features. I just wish encrypted conversations were on by default.

It's also really annoying that you can't see secret conversations on the desktop app...

Is anybody deleting their WhatsApp but keeping their facebook? I don't mean the app - I don't have messenger or FB installed on my phone - but the actual page/account. I'm wondering if keeping your FB account kind of makes deleting WhatsApp a bit pointless. I also have a FB business page that I don't want to delete right now. As a self employed person, I can't be killing off potential income streams

I'd like to delete my personal page eventually, but I will not be deleting Instagram, but it doesn't have access to my contacts.

Secret conversations cannot be synced across all platforms unfortunately. It uses a different encryption (E2EE) that WhatsApp uses and that is why your phone must be on to use WhatsApp Web for desktop.

Telegram has a different system that all your chats including files is in your secured cloud, so you don’t need your phone on to connect to Telegram. Telegram is supported on most devices including iPad.

That’s not to say cloud sync chats doesn’t have any encryption (it does).

I’ll try again then.
EDIT :This time it worked. Thank you.
I’m having a rough time trying to import contacts. I’m going through my 6th time.

EDIT : If it can help anyone here... contacts finally synced to desktop but only after I sent a Note to self from my phone .

What a terrible time for Signal to be down... just as we're trying to convince our WhatsApp diehard friends to convert!!

40million new users in a couple of days, apparently

Yes messages not going through, calls dropping. Sad.

Switch to Telegram or Signal.

I think since this announcement telegram had > 100,000 users / day sign up, something crazy like that.

The main thing I don't really like about WhatsApp is how it listens to every word I say even when the phone is off. That is the creepiest fishiest app ever. Unforunately I still need it because everyone in Indonesia here is using it, but I am opting out of it.

And I turned off Microphone access, too bad no voice messages and video calls but it's just not worth having my phone - hardware I paid for - being turned into a spying device. None of the Facebook property apps now have mic access, they all listen. None of them get updated anymore either. Screw FB.
