Were there any MacBooks on display?

----------

I don't believe that's the case ;)

The excessive shipping time for the gold model shows some people liked it. It's a fine system for what it is: an early adopter's road warrior.

Clarification: There is no Fan keeping the Macbook cool. It is fanless.

I will be in the US during the end of April. If I buy it now for pick it up at the store, is there any problem? I mean, will the store keep my order for 20 days there?

What's going on Angela Ahrendts?
Sounds like a manufacturing issue not a distribution issue. I kinda expected it for the watch, not so much for the Mac Book.

For the Mac Book I see this as a sign that either demand is much higher than expected or that Apple hasn't been able to ramp up production as fast as they may have wanted.

demand is so high it's preventing them from having any demos?

Delays are to be expected w. Apple launches. Supply and demand. So many whiners and complainers on this board that can't get their new toys today. Poor things.

Fair enough running out of stock, but not having any display models to test out is crazy.

Who would buy a new MacBook without playing around with it for a while? The same people that would buy a dog turd if it had an Apple logo I suppose...

Given this has an entirely new keyboard and track pad, I'd absolutely want to try it first before investing $1,299 (USD).

I can understand limited in store stock, but having absolutely none just reaps of poor planning and/or rushing a product to market.

Maybe Apple is reworking it to shoehorn another USB-C port on the other side.:p

So which part is causing the production problem? Can't be the display. I bet it is some hight current device related to USB-C.

Wow disappointing, while I'm not a fan of the product, I did want to check it out.

Yes, and in addition, you'd like not to see a company foul up a roll-out so badly. At the very least, their communication and expectation-setting has been extremely poor.

Seems to be that she's instilling this new "try in store, but order online" philosophy.

Honestly I don't think she has anything to do with this problem. Well other than trying to gloss over Apples production problems in the public eye. As I stated before I more or less expected limited availability for the watch. Why there is a problem with the Mac Book is a puzzle.

In other words the lack of stock for the Mac Book should really be what people should be concerned about.

That very thought occurred to me when we heard that Apple was directing people to buy online. Why have a store then?

Ahh, glad you asked. They're great for adding rental expense to the P&L, what else would you want from an expensive physical facility???

My understanding from the local store is that they have rMB floor units out today, but not stock. This is what the online store said last night at 3:07am EDT as well, so I just ordered online. Got first round of shipments on gold 1.2/512. It'll be waiting for me after the trip I'm about to take. REALLY wanted to have it with me for the trip, but oh well, as Buddha said, life is suffering.

;)

No, that isn't what I mean. What I mean is that stock is so low that it is easier for Apple to ship what they have from a central location instead trying to manage stock in individual stores. In other words when your stock is limited you don't want it tied up guessing which store will need the next allocation, instead you ship directly to the customers as the orders come in.

Considering how quickly inventory dissipated I'm pretty sure this was their goal, that is to ship the little bit they had directly to their first customers. The real question in my mind is why they had so little stock of the Mac Book in the first place. It isn't the laptop for everybody but that doesn't mean it wouldn't sell well especially to early adopters. You would think that they would have had a couple of million ready to go.

They will hold them for 60 days.

More likely it's because she knows the Apple Watch will be a failure, at least in the short term.

Unlike other Apple execs (and very un-Jobsian) Ahrendts received most of her pay up front in the form of $70M+ cash bonuses, so this $6M stock sale is pocket change. I think she knows that her role is to act as scapegoat if this watch intro fizzles.

You need to make those early adopters happy!
Who would buy a new MacBook without playing around with it for a while?
I did when buying my MBP last month. Of course in that case I understood what I was getting.
The same people that would buy a dog turd if it had an Apple logo I suppose...

For a radical machine like the Mac Book I certainly wouldn't buy without trying and reading a few decent in depth reviews. However my early adopter days have passed! That is probably the result of old age but I will let somebody else go the early adopter route with the Mac Book.

They could have shipments this afternoon. Many Apple stores have not yet received their daily shipments.

Give me $35M upfront and $3M in stock sales and I will be your scapegoat for anything you want me to. Anything.
