The current rumor with Mazda is that they are having more trouble than they expected getting it to work. An alleged leaked email indicated mid next year.

It's a bit of a pain to install, and it isn't cheap, but if your car has a double-DIN space for a replacement stereo, the CarPlay receivers from Alpine and Pioneer are both terrific.

I have an Alpine ILX-007 in my 2010 Honda, and it has changed my life.

I think Apple has largely missed the mark with CarPlay. Instead of limiting its use to a handful of apps, it should've basically turned the car's screen into a "dumb touchscreen", much like a TV is when AirPlay Mirroring is enabled (minus the touchscreen part, obviously). They could've built some smarts into the iOS device connected to the car to prevent it from being able to project video onto the screen, for obvious reasons. It's insane that these are the only third-party apps supported by CarPlay:

It's especially annoying because Apple clearly doesn't care if you choose not to use their Podcasts app, but they'll be damned if you're going to use anything other than Apple Maps for navigation.

Recently my wife got a brand new Ford Edge Sport 2018 which has CarPlay. It is a great disappointment that it requires the cable. I am also underwhelmed with its minimal features. I drove a few times and the novelty of CarPlay disappeared almost instantly and I prefer the Sync 3 in it which does all I need. I guess option is there if we ever need to plug in but it definitely won’t be used all the time.

For those with broken clicker-fingers, here's an excerpt from the article I linked above.

Voice control is just part of this new ecosystem, but it’s one of the most important issues to consumers, both for convenience and for safety.

About 3,500 highway deaths in the U.S. last year were due to driver distraction. Part of that is smartphone use, but in-car infotainment systems are to blame too, according to a study funded by the AAA Foundation. Take your eyes off the road for only two seconds and accident risk skyrockets, the study notes — but researchers found drivers spending 40 seconds or more programming navigation systems or tapping out texts on the car’s touchscreen.

Even hands-free voice conversation increases accident risk, studies have shown, partly because people fiddle with their phones even when Bluetooth’s on. Pure voice control would allow drivers to keep eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Do any of these cars have a pad to set your iPhone on for inductive charging which then also wirelessly connect to CarPlay? That’s the ultimate
That's what I'm waiting for. Wireless Qi charging in many.... now just for wireless CarPlay.

I have found the exact opposite with my 2017 Explorer. I use it all the time. My favorite feature is when it knows my calendar and offers Maps to the place I need to be. Music is great and easy to use, so is texting and phone calls. Much better than Sync as CarPlay is much better at recognizing which phone number to use (work/iPhone/home). My only complaint is the PodCast app only plays the most recent episode, so it's not as handy.

I can see why some folks like it, but I absolutely hate CarPlay in cars with functional infotainment systems of their own. CarPlay looks ugly, and you can't do split screen on it. Which is just nonsensical. You want to change music while navigating Apple Maps? Too bad, you'll have to look at the Music app and forego Apple Maps.

It is barely useful in rental cars that don't have their own Navigation, I guess.

My wife just got a new car and CarPlay came standard. But so did the stock audio interface, which is laughably antiquated compared with CarPlay’s clean and simple layout. And all we have to do is plug in an iPhone and it’s automatically there. I really like it.

Quite possibly somebody thinks you're ugly. The point being, that's a seriously subjective complaint.

I've been using CarPlay in my Chevy Bolt for nearly a year now. On a reasonable sized head unit screen (which this car has) it is actually quite useful and certainly a superior experience to any OEM system I've used (an admittedly low bar). You don't have to forego maps to play music. Once you've set what you want to hear switch back to Maps. A split screen might be a good idea, provided the screen is large enough to accommodate both. Keep in mind that it has to work on screens of all sizes and shapes, so this is not a trivial issue. The better news is CarPlay will continue to develop, which is a lot more than you can say for the OEM systems.

Speaking of which, I've been hearing from my fellow Bolt owners that Android Auto doesn't properly recognize the size of the screen and displays maps with black bars around the edges. You'd probably think that was pretty ugly even if you were its mother.

How long is your commute daily? It takes me 10-15 minutes to get to work and I am in and out of vehicle all day. If I had to plug in and out constantly it would drive me crazy. Maybe this makes a difference.

how many support wireless implementation?

Do any of these cars have a pad to set your iPhone on for inductive charging which then also wirelessly connect to CarPlay? That’s the ultimate

I desire a wireless solution in my 2018 Honda Odyssey. The car has a Qi charging pad, and I now have a iPhone X...wireless CarPlay would be the cherry on this sundae. The wireless implementation ball might be in Honda's court, not Apple's, however.

My KiA has CarPlay and a wireless charging pad but it can only connect via USB and disconnects from bluetooth when linked to CarPlay. Its a minor annoyance, but fingers crossed it may be something for the future with a firmware update for KIA ??

BMW is the only automaker that is doing Wireless CarPlay at this time. It's pretty much available in all of their 2018 models, as a $300 add on that you can purchase from their ConnectedDrive store. At WWDC this year, Apple even went through the trouble of creating a "developing for Wireless CarPlay" class because nobody else is bothering to develop for it, and they really want automakers to join. Earlier this year a manufacturer of infotainment systems, Harman, mentioned they had developed a wireless CarPlay system for use by several of their major clients. https://www.theverge.com/2017/2/23/14716566/wireless-carplay-harman-more-cars

Don't hold your breath for Toyota/Lexus. It will ever ever happen.

Had to replace my 2011 Prius recently and my two final contenders were the current model Prius and the Hyundai Ioniq. Went with the Ioniq because of CarPlay (and better MPG, better value, but CarPlay was definitely a big reason).

That's by design... but, why would you want to use Bluetooth while connected to CarPlay? It runs all of your calls through USB Audio when on CarPlay

Anybody that loves CarPlay clearly doesn’t use a GPS map service very often.

I was really excited to get it and even gave Apple maps a good faith effort for the first few weeks. However, upon consistently seeing Google/Waze find faster routes solely based on traffic flow that Apple never considered pretty much killed it for me.

I’ll still use it for texting while driving but otherwise it’s pretty spare beyond podcasts. Even then, I have to run iCatcher from my phone but can at least use the skip controls through CarPlay.

Carplay and Android Auto are both huge steps backward. In this age, gadgets should have their own network connections, not be chained to another device. Computers and network connections are how cheap? Yet the solution for my car is supposed to be to hook it to my phone? The car should do its own streaming and such, be it through a special car OS or through an Apple or Android system.

Years ago I stopped buying printers if they had to hook straight to a PC. They have their own network connection. So a $200 printer is more advanced than a $30,000 car. Stupid.

Do you find that Siri does not work with Odyssey 2018 CarPlay with a phone running iOS 11? My CarPlay was working like charm with iOS 10. Since I installed iOS 11 it broke Siri - it can almost never connect. It happened with my iPhone 7+, my wife’s iPhone 7 and now my new iPhone X. It’s very annoying.

Have only used CarPlay for about a month now in my 2018 Honda Civic, but now I can’t imagine not having it! So convenient.

Not an exaggeration to say this is a must-have feature going forward.

Same here, just got CarPlay for the first time last month when I purchased a new Grand Cherokee and I wouldn't want to own a car without it now.
