How do you do all that? I know geek tools, but how do you have the ichat or adium list there?

Just set your Adium to 'Group Bubbles' and right-click the group names (which collapses and expands the group in the contact list) and click 'Detach Window'. You can then place them side by side. Then just heavily modify a theme which has no background over the group name but a translucent black over the contacts. Photoshop a translucent black box onto your favourite wallpaper and set as wallpaper. I used Helvetica Nueue as the font for everything.
