What is the difference now and then?
There is a new virus every few years, only now scientists found a way to name and identify the culprit. 10 years ago this would be just a tougher than average flu season.

The world has gone crazy just because the media is hyping everything up to get some attention.

The difference is this may be 50x more deadly than the flu, and appears at least as contagious, if not more so.

Why is this so hard for everyone to understand?

Why don't we just cancel everything now, instead of "waiting to be canceled soon"

It's headed that way anyway. Perhaps some just "hope" for the better.....

Ya right..

Crazy, perhaps, but the head of the countries assuming everything is "fine and dandy" Now that is more concerning.

Weather the media hyped this up, or not, wouldn't have mattered.. Thank now its known then left in secret.

Prudent to cancel all events where crowds will gather imho. This thing is spreading despite efforts at quarantine. Here in the UK more diagnosed cases are cropping up. First death that I know of as well. The person was in quarantine on a cruise ship to begin with then transferred to a quarantine facility and despite these precautions the poor individual is no longer with us. So sad.

You do realize CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 32 million flu illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations and 18,000 deaths from flu. That’s just in the US

Happens every year. Should we cancel all events now? This strain of the flu is hardly significant compared to overall. But the media feeds fear and doesn’t put corona numbers in perspective. Most people have no clue.

You do realize, some are projecting as many as two million deaths in the United States don't you? If serous efforts are not made to contain this, one in three will quite possibly get it. If it spreads to that level, the death rate will probably go up. Hospitals will not have the resources to treat the seriously ill. That does not count those who die of other causes due to not having medical treatment.

Get a flu shot, and in an average year you have little to worry about. Can’t do that with COVID-19.
Get the flu, and you have about a 1 in 2000 chance of dying. Get COVID-19 and have about a 1 in 30 chance of dying.

This is not a flu read up on it. It’s LIKE a flu but then it changes. Also yes the FLU kills more because it’s been around a long time but you need to look at the MORTALITY rate currently. The flu is at .01 and yes if you look into how many people have it deaths are still a larger number. BUT the corona virus is at around 2% and that’s only for the low numbers so far

Also the FLU has vaccines and medicine for it. Corona has Zero so, they are working on things but right now it’s nothing but normal drugs to deal with the system to fight it off

So yes it should be a concern.

Current treatment is hydration and ventilation. Hydration is easy. Ventilation requires skilled medical personnel and equipment. There is only a tiny fraction of the equipment necessary if it spreads as it has in other countries.

"Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year."

Well, it can't be stopped as it spreads like the flu, so 5 times the flu would make 2.5 million deaths this year alone from this corona-virus. You know that can't be true. With a SARS-like virus it all could have worked as it spreads much slower and is deadlier but not this one, the craziness probably kills more people than it saves. Granted, we didn't know that from the start, now we do.

You are not understanding what “50x more deadly” means, apparently.

If you catch COVID-19, your chances of dying are 50x your chances of dying if you catch the flu. You are much more likely to die IF you catch COVID-19.

So what’s super important is reducing the likelihood of you catching COVID-19. It’s not hysteria to say “don’t catch this disease, because if you do, you have around a 2 or 3 in 100 chance of dying.” The flu gives you around a 1 in 1000 chance of dying.

Now, add in the fact that the average person with COVID-19 appears to infect between 2 and 3 people, meaning it is more contagious than most diseases with similar lethality rates, and you might begin to understand why people are worried.

I understand the term "more deadly", but Corona can't be stopped because it spreads like the Flu. So in effect, it will have the same infection rate as the Flu. It's in 10 or more non-quarantined countries already.

Maybe it could be slowed down a bit but that's about it.

Looking at the current victims I think that the smokers and vapers will have the biggest problems with the disease as it is the smoking part of the Chinese population that has the highest mortality rate.

The mortality rate is flawed. They don’t know. It killed more because it started in areas of few resources. Still it’s mostly elderly deaths like the reg flu. It’ll be a distant memory once flu season ends.

It’s much ado about nothing besides a frenzied media looking for ratings or other agendas.

It’s funny to see idiots so scared they’re out buying face masks. I saw a few at grocery wearing masks. Lol. Have to laugh at them.

It started in China. They have a better health system than the United States. They make most of the equipment and supplies used by American hospitals. They keep the good stuff and sell the lower quality stuff to the Yanks.

This virus is far more contagious than your average influenza strain, and will most likely spread even in summer, just like the American (”Spanish”) flu a century ago.

No, it’s likely because viruses tend to be less transmissible and viable in hotter, drier weather. Listening to some recent news, some Projections are that the virus will wane throughout the summer months, but could re-emerge through the entire flu season next year worse than this spring In more countries.

Nor do you.

All we know is the data we currently have. Anything else is speculation. You keep poo-pooing all of us that are relying on actual numbers, when all you are relying on is guesses.

A patient infected with the novel coronavirus in King County, Washington state, has died, a Washington Department of Health spokesperson said Saturday.

It's the first confirmed death from the coronavirus in the United States.

Yes and it probably won’t be the last unfortunately.

The press aren’t setting up quarantine zones or mass testing the last time I checked. This sort of behaviour does not happen with “normal” flu. It is being taken very seriously and quite rightly so.

Coronavirus isn't even that bad. Not good, obviously, but it's just a bad cold. Compromised immune systems should avoid ANY cold/flu.

A few days of high temps that CDC gives freaking ibuprofen and gatorade. Can everyone just freaking chill out?
