Any player that admits to using steroids while breaking a baseball record has no right to be there.

That's my opinion. We all have them.:)

So, if a player doesn't admit to it, he can be enshrined? Is that what you mean to say?

See, that's the problem. What if someone gets in, then confesses to using performance enhancing drugs? Kick him out?

Or, admit by the numbers, add an asterisk? It's not so clear-cut.

It really doesn't matter because the writers won't vote them in. Take Bonds for example. There is no official proof that he was on it but everyone knows he was. Combine that with periodic laziness in the outfield and surliness towards the same reporters who have to vote him in.

Not every questionable person will be barred but the high profile ones, like Bonds, McGwire & Clemens who broke records, will never get in. Baseball is built on its records.

Sad at it seems, especially with me really liking Clemens, I think this will hurt and ultimatly cost them the HOF.

They should just make steroids mandatory and even the playing field so to speak. It would get rid of any illegal advantage, and make sports more interesting to watch.

Great idea, let's force them to screw up their bodies.

Can you name many drugs that aren't illegal to abuse?

Alcohol. Tobacco. Coffee. Many others.

A drug is any substance that alters the way the body or mind works.

If we restrict it to your context of drugs that enhance sporting performance, then coffee, caffeine, sugar, dextrose, glucose, honey, chocolate, isotonic drinks, auto-blood transfusions and many more are all legal to use and abuse.

(am not totally sure about the legality under baseball doping rules of caffeine and auto-blood tranfusions, but they and others are legal under government rules)

It might be just me, but I seem to remember that McGwire already confessed this back in '98 or '99. He admitted it kinda casually I think, because it wasn't against any rules or laws, and it's not like he was the only one doing it.

Anyone else, or am I mistaken?

He did admit to using "supplements", especially Creatine, but he never came out and admitted steroid usage.

While the baseball writers may never vote McGuire to the Hall, it appears that the fans in St. Louis don't seem to care about his steroid usage. Check out their reaction to him being introduced in St. Louis today.

I think he'll still be voted to the hall, not saying that he should be of course. Putting an * next to all his records wont do any good, and in my opinion, he should be banned from the hall of fame just to make an example of him and make sure no one else does steroids, and we keep the game clean. Of course the city of St. Louis is going to welcome him, he did so much for that franchise and for the same reason SF won't boo Bonds. Bonds gave the city a competitive team which won't be forgotten, whether he cheated or not.

Well, then we need to see the infamous list that is semi-secret. A few player's names have been leaked. But do any of them deserve to be elected into the Hall? Should there be an investigation to root out members who cheated in another era? If you think this is new, you've got another think coming. The "Steriods Era" is famous because the effects were so dramatic.

That's why they say we're the best fans in baseball ;)

The only way he would've gotten booed is if he walked on the stage in a Cubs uniform.

Sooo...you're the best fans in baseball because you continue to cheer for a fraud and a cheat who would be utterly unimpressive if it weren't for his steroid-enhanced HR totals?

That's not an accurate description of McGwire. He was an All-Star before starting to use steroids, and not just at the Major League level.

Ok, take a look at his career numbers--if not for his HRs, he doesn't merit consideration for the Hall of Fame. Better than average, sure...but not great. Still not sure why the "best fans" would continue to support a cheat and a fraud.
