Let me tell you... Tim Cook.... the most hypocritical character out there.

I have a good friend working at Apple at C level. To paraphrase him: we are here for the money, those days with cool inventions are gone. We have a load of things not being developed because we are making money with what we have out there, like Hollywood remakes.

I don’t expect Apple (or Facebook) to care about me. In that regard, they are the same. I do expect, because of their statements and especially their actions, for Apple to care more about protect its users’ privacy. They can do this without giving me a hug.

When Zuckerberg tries to dismiss this important issue as something “touchy-feely” he is missing the point.
Well said.

Yeah, but lest's face it, if Tim Cook was so caring and Facebook was so bad for us, then he should just ban it from the app store, correct? The fact is, Apple has the luxury of making money off of selling hardware that runs Facebook. They enable all of the data concerns by working with unsafe partners, just like Facebook did, yes? Cook has some nerve distributing and making money off of Facebook on one hand and then decrying it on the other.

Frankly, I'm shocked that there is any controversy around this story at all. "Oh gasp, they used "marginally ill-gotten" data to send me targeted ads that are probably something I would be interested in and aligned with my political beliefs?" Umm... it's called social media.

Cook could better deliver good alternatives instead of talk. Show us the products, both, hard- and software so we don’t have to choose. Instead he has chosen to deliver the minimum and charge the max. No talk or attack, be the best and the rest will follow.

Apple can't figure out what to do with data when you spoon-feed it to them. I can't count how many Apple Developer bug reports I've filled out (and I'm not even a developer, just a frustrated consumer), and not one of them was acted on. From what I've heard they just sit there, even when they come from well-known developers.

Maybe Apple is ideologically opposed to making sense of large amounts of data, but I also just don't think it's in their toolbox to do it if they weren't opposed to it.

They've never been great with online services, but Apple in particular is a can't walk and chew gum at the same time company. Ever since the first iPhone release when they had to delay Leopard as a result of moving engineers from OS X to iPhone, Apple has had a habit of picking up one tennis ball in the mouth to drop another. They are a huge company by market cap, but they just don't seem able to do a lot of things at once like other big companies (say Philips or GE or Samsung). This is a company that delivered Maps and was surprised that it was a disaster when all summer long it was plain as day that in the betas that it was a disaster. That's not the type of company that could do what Facebook or Google or Amazon do. This is a company that takes their online store down for hours for a slightly updated iPad. Maybe they really don't want to do what those other companies do, but I also think that they can't.

Apple sells products that people want to buy. Don't like Apple's products? Don't buy them, there are many alternatives, nobody is forcing you, not even close to a Monoploy in any area. I'm not sure what Mark's point is here?

Apple is successful because they make great products. If they ever stop making great products then they will stop being successful.

You have a good friend who works in the C-suite at Apple? What does this person do?

Gotta love when these two left-wing authoritarianism advocates go at each other. Zuckerberg is right that companies that charge you more don't necessarily care more, but that is irrelevant since he needs to be specific about Apple if he wants to be taken seriously.

This is false. You been around long enough to know this is false. iAds failed primarily because Apple overcharged for the service and very few companies used it. The advertisement for iAds even bragged about how much data Apple had on customers.

This is also false. Siri's responses to personalized requests are primarily affected by Apple's policies. General information requests don't need personal information and general information is one of Siri's weaknesses. Apple's privcy policy can't be used as a crutch since Apple does indeed collect a crap ton of information on customers.

3 for 3 on falsehoods. They don't give away data. I suspect you're going to try to jigger facts to parse out a different meaning of Google data. Please don't do that. You know everyone is referencing specific customer data. You also know that Google hasn't/isn't/won't give you specific customer data.

It has been known for some time that Google and Amazon look much closer at voice data that is collected, so they are much faster at adding responses to their AI.

You can use google Ad data anytime you want, it is summary data, but user data no less.

So is Tim Cook.. Tim Cook only cares about his numbers.. Just like any CEO. People think thank Tim Cook is some sort of nice guy... He plays a good one though....

True, but Tim Cook's care about his numbers of sold iPhones can cause him to respect the privacy of his users. Who cares if it's because he "Cares for users" or uses it to sell more iPhones.

Once again - you are semantically incorrect. You are asserting that somehow, Google is selling personal (PII) data. They are not. The FUD needs to stop. You can talk about targeting all you want, but don't make it sound like Google is selling YOUR data.

Where do you think target data come from?

Maybe Tim should end Facebook and all other social media apps from it's precious ecosystem. Show us you really are behind 'your data is your data'. Let's see how sales figures are after that?

Facebook claiming to care about their userbase is a bit like a farmer claiming to care about beef cattle.

Their biggest margin product is not growing at the same rate though...

Some farmers do hug their cows!

And what proof do you have that he isn't a nice guy and he doesn't care? You don't.

Yep. Tim's objective is to maximize profit, not to make friends and help the world.
