No, one is at most designer market, the other is watchmaker market.

I would think there is a large crossover. In my case, and that is only my case, if I did pick one up it would be for sports stuff and my nice Fossil will be on my wrist the rest of the time. Like others have been saying, wait and see, have to physically pick one up to play with before judging.

If millions buy an Apple Watch, those people are less likely to buy a Swiss watch. I'm sure that their sales WILL go down. How much remains to be seen.

I agree. I own a few high-grade watches (Breitling, Panerai etc.), and if the aWatch turns out to be the one I'm wearing all the time, I see no point in buying more mechanical watches for 4-figure amounts of money. I'd probably even sell those I wear rarely.

How are people on MacRumors so "meh" about the Watch? I'm betting on *much* more hype and marketing before the actual release/pre-order, so I'll also wager that all the "meh"s we're seeing now will flip soon enough.

Watches are jewelry, it's not something that will appeal to everyone as we all have different styles. I was excited for the watch until they unveiled it. Other than the bands and how easily they are changed/configured for right and left handed people. I think the watch looks terrible. I also think the wide bands on the iPhone 6 look tacky. However I bought the iPhone 6 because it's still a great phone.

Like you said though. Maybe when the watch is on display in the stores I'll change my opinion on it. But there is a lot we still don't know about it. Sending emoji's is not something that appeals to me. The phone already is a pedometer and comes with Apple Pay. Only thing that the watch does different is a heart monitor.

I was pretty interested 1-2 years ago. Then we saw the upper limits of battery life with Pebble eInk, and the lower limit with Motorola and Samesung. All hopes of a killer feature or slim form factor were dashed after the last keynote. I am looking for a reason to covet the thing, but so far I do see any.

Mmm I don't know about this. By the time I get finished turning that little dial and finding what I want, I think I could have pulled out my phone, found the app/:apple: pay option and put it back.

Ehh... As it stands right now, the Apple Watch is really not that appealing to me. I hope that from here to when it is released there's something else to it that makes me want to have it.

If it was a real stand-alone iOS device with a GSM radio, l would want one. As an iPhone accessory, meh.

because gold it's what makes it more valuable. A ring can be made of plastic, or gold. Try to give your wife a plastic ring for Christmas...;)

Well

If you are saying:

Plastic Ring = Apple Watch quality
Gold Ring = Apple Watch quality with a gold case around the outside.

If you are saying that, that in effect a normal Aluminium / Stainless steel has the same quality/value perception as a plastic ring then I guess you are right.

I myself would see a Plastic ring and a Gold ring as miles apart.
I would not however class an Apple watch with a high polished quality stainless steel case, THAT much different from the exact same item in every way apart from a gold case.

Since the iPhone 6 and in particular iOS 8 has been full of issues I wouldn't have much confidence in "current" Apple being able to get a largely new device and OS working well.

I hope it's a massive flop actually so maybe they'll start to focus again because currently the whole Eco System is looking less and less appealing compared to more open systems - if you can't have reliability why get locked in?

Meh... all that talk about Switzerland being 'in deep ****', they got nothing to worry about...

ipod - walkman, portable CD and other media portable players have nothing to worry about.
iphone - cell phone KINGs of the day have nothing to worry about.
iTunes - CD sales have nothing to worry about
ipad - Microsoft XP Tablet edition has nothing to worry about
Apple watch - ____________________________________

Lucky for Apple you're not marketing their wearables division!

Yes, I think a lot of people will feel that, and find that is a drawback of this current first version.

And of course, the bulk of Smart phone users could not put an Apple watch to use anyway as they don't own a very recent Apple phone.

I would imagine it won't be long before Apple are able to improve the current first version watch to a point it becomes useful in it's own right as a stand alone device.

Other brands will, so it will pay Apple to do this when they can to stop another brand of watch coming along and talking the bulk of the new smartwatch market for itself whilst Apple's version stays only an iPhone accessory.

Perhaps with a v2 model or v3 model after a year or two of model updates this may become possible. Otherwise they will simply saturate the iPhone accessory buying market with no where to expand into.

Valentine's Day

Sounds like it may be ready for a Valentine's Day weekend launch, though maybe Apple would want to avoid a Friday the 13th launch date.

You won't even have to navigate through the apps to use Apple Pay. With the iPhone 6 you just hold your phone near the NFC and touch your finger. With the apple watch you just tap your watch at the NFC station.

get ready for "crown-gate"

Too bad you can't run with this thing without an iPhone. Totally pointless. Sure maybe I could track HR but lack of independent GPS etc defeats the whole point. I want to exercise with only a watch, not a watch on my wrist and an iPhone on my arm.

Am I missing something?

:D

Well, there has to be MORE for a product to change from mass market to very high end than just changing the case material.

Take a Volkswagen Beetle in brushed Aluminum or high quality polished steel, and sell millions of them.
Remove the body and replace it with a thin gold body. It's still not a luxury car.

For me anyway, personally, just the case/body material change is not enough to transform the entire product into something else.
Not when the other 95% of the device is exactly the same

A person who spent only $2000 on a Swiss watch wouldn't be showing it off at a party, they'd be hiding their head in shame.
What an ignorant and shortsighted view. I'll take a $2000 timeless Swiss watch that will be worth double that (or more) in 20 years to a old piece of unsupported technology that could only measure a heartbeat and won't turn on any longer when the 15th version of the iWatch comes out.

those who buy swiss watch usually have 2 or more watches at home. Plus i really dont see this watch being a competition to the current swiss watches, totally different segment no matter how Apple tries to convince us with those flashy Paris shows.
