Mmm, sorry, no, I don't agree. MC and Visa, being "arms length" in this country, really don't even have a vote at the table. It's the banks negotiating the agreement(s) with Apple. In the US, they're already setup as clearing houses for the payments. There's nothing to "roadmap". Better to call it a wishlist.

The banks had it on their wishlist for last year. Didn't happen. Something needs to break the deadlock in the negotiations.

It is important. The banks just issue the cards, but the underlying systems are MasterCard/Visa's. They are responsible for tokenisation and provisioning.
For Apple Pay, they still need to sign agreements with Apple, but it leverages a lot of V/MC tech. So, they need to be ready for when banks and Apple decide to launch Apple Pay

Yep, I know - the mechanisms are already there - in the US and the UK. Only thing that needs to happen in Canada is the banks and Apple agreeing to how the fees will be shared. There isn't a technical problem to be solved here, solely a business one. The tokenization/provisioning systems have long been there (it's how the NFC payments work today) - simply that Apple isn't in the picture yet for sharing the revenue.
