So with all the panic and 'controversy' over the Jet Black I thought I'd post pictures to show that the Black finish is not indelible either.

I noticed this morning that the black paint is coming off around my lightning port.

I guess this is from when I am putting it on charge (I can find it a fiddle doing so at night in the dark) and I doubt a different case would stop this.

No big deal but somewhat surprising after only 5 days use.

Apologies for poor pics - taken with old iPad!

I had this and thought it was scratched same as you. I found on mine it was a bit of fluff/dirt between the case and the socket. It was pretty ingrained in there but was able to remove it with a plastic tooth pick after a bit of digging.

Your plugging it in wrong :D

I must be!!

Not fluff in this case as right on (or rather off) the bezel.

Same issue as the iPhone 5 had.
The black is just a thin anodized layer on top of the aluminum.
Any scratches will make the lighter aluminum color shine through.

That's why I liked the Space Grey iPhones so much, because the difference in color of the aluminum vs. the anodizing wasn't that great, scratches and nicks won't show up as much.

Here is a pic of the 5:

Yup same issue on my 6S I sold, nicks around the lightning port in the anodizing.

Just no good way around it after day after day of the lightning cable (and metal pins) hitting it. It didn't affect the resale value at all as these were the only marks on the phone.

I don't think they are supposed to be indelible

I wasn't suggesting they were meant to be but everyone seems to think that Black is better than Jet Black because it won't scratch as much.

I didn't have this on my Space Grey 6s (or it wasn't noticeable) and my 5s was gold.

I think the biggest difference is the JB just shows more. It is not necessarily that it is scratching more. Everyone should be aware that the darker finishes show scratches a lot easier than the lighter ones. Even my Space Gray MacBook shows more than the Space Grey iPhones b.c it is a darker shade.

Unfortunately I think we all expected there could be this price for having real black back as a color, especially when Apple made the announcement of the jet black being prone to showing scratches. The black sport watches show wear and tear yet remain the most popular choice according to two salesclerks I asked, one at Apple and one at Best Buy. Apple execs must have decided there could be a similar demand for black iPhones that would hold strong even in the face of this choice showing scratches more.

I think there's a sort of rugged attractiveness to the black watches and iPhones showing some scuffs. However, as a lady, I think I'll let my husband rock that look and I'll opt for silver if I get an iPhone 7. I was torn between black and silver and now I think I'll go for silver. Thank you for sharing your pics.

I very much agree with this. I don't mind the scratches at all....adds character to the phone.

Yeah, if you rub something (like a lightning plug) against aluminum enough, it will scratch. It will also scratch the silver, gold, and rose gold versions.
