I want to be excited. I really do. But I have zero confidence that current hardware made by different manufacturers will be updated with software to allow interoperability, even if the necessary hardware is already there. They are going to hope that we buy new hardware and probably charge even more for it.
Yeah I was hoping that my Nest would get Apple Home capability, but I’d be very surprised if they do it.

Not too excited for this - I saw a comment a while ago saying that this will be minimum interoperability. I imagine this to be similar to using an Amazon Echo as a hub for Hue lights - the basic commands will work (turn lights on/off, set colours), but the advanced stuff still needs a Hue bridge.
Phillips has already said that Thread will only be enabled on the Hue Bridge, so Matter will not apply to the individual lights, just the bridge. It will probably start out with just basic commands being supported and as it evolves (think v1.5 or 2.0), then more complicated commands/workflows will be supported.

Remember Thread? This is just another stupid standard that won't get implemented well IMO
According to the article, "Matter works over Wi-Fi and Thread". I know what WiFi is, but I was never able to figure out exactly what Thread does.

EDIT OK, just did a little research. The last time I looked (admittedly, a while ago) I couldn't find any definitive information on Thread. It seems to be better documented now, and is an interesting idea. Curious to know if it has gotten any traction - I don't see it mentioned much.

I'm really surprised by all the hate here (but it is MR, so maybe I shouldn't be). I for one, am looking forward to this being implemented. Currently use HomeBridge for my non-nativeHK devices, but hopefully, in time, this will elevate the need for a bridge. It has had so many delays, that I'm sure the rollout is going to be slow, and hopefully, all products released within the past couple of years will be updated to support it.

Can we also stop with all the puns? Been there done that.

Thread is a protocol that the devices use to communicate with each other via a mesh network, that way there is no central point of failure. If one device goes down, then the devices reconfigure to keep working together.

Thread is a separate connectivity standard that works to create basically a local wireless mesh network that can, but doesn’t have to, be connected to the outside world with a “border router.” (Notably, the HomePod mini and the 2021 Apple TV can serve as a Thread border router.)

Its foremost benefits for most use cases are reliability and offloading smart home accessory traffic from your Wi-Fi network, which can be important if you have a lot of accessories.

I am just waiting for my Nest thermostat to die, it was dead to me as soon as Google bought them. I have it and other devices like my garage door openers imported into HomeKit via Homebridge running on my NAS.

I have been waiting on a unifying standard for a while now. Looking to get everything in one App. The damn X10 I have just will not die either, but only a device or two left on that now.

Hopefully when I make my next automation push everything will be under one standard…

You’ll have to forgive us for being very cautious in our optimism. HomeKit barely seems like a hobby to Apple at this point so it’s tough to see where this is headed for HomeKit. Are there any devices currently on the market that don’t work with HomeKit but will once Matter is deployed on iOS?

To the future ioT enthusiasts out there, this will be great. To the majority of users today, we will probably be disappointed that current gen devices will not be updated for monetary reasons…but I have my finger crossed. I’ve been lucky to only have 3 companies not use HomeKit, Wyze, and ultimately Rachio, and a Nest Protect. Everything else I just refused to buy into their ecosystem without them supporting HomeKit. Wait & see approach ke-t money in my pocket

(Signify) haven’t committed any of their Philips Hue devices to Thread yet. They’re still firmly on the Zigbee wireless mesh train.

They have committed to Matter (over Ethernet) on the Hue Bridge.

I understand the cautious optimism, but some people are being incredibly pessimistic. I really think it's going to be slow going and current HK users may be disappointed for the next year or two until Matter starts to gain steam, but this is the first step into having a truly connected home. I hesitate to say "smart" home because it still takes a lot of setup from the user.

As far as non HK devices what will once they are updated to Matter? I'm hoping for my brand new Liftmaster MyQ garage opener to be, my Samsung refrigerator, Sony TV; that's pretty much all the ones I currently have that don't support HK. All 3 of those manufacturers are on the Matter consortium, so my fingers are crossed that they all update my current devices to support it.

Finally. Now I can look forward to using devices that will be compatible with everything and won't lock me into any particular ecosystem.

Unfortunately I don’t think Matter will have anything to do with creating Nest-HomeKit comparability.
"The Google Nest Thermostat is one of the first smart thermostats that will support the new Matter smart home interoperability standard, launching this fall. Once it's updated to support Matter, the thermostat will work with any Matter-compliant smart home system, including Apple HomeKit and Siri."

I totally agree, we will get screwed over on this. I also think it will take a very long time to implement, and Apple will likely shank their implementation with swarms of bugs, as usual...

In my experience most of this smart stuff isn't that smart at all
Most of the lack of smarts is in the "brains" of the people on the Apple HomeKit team.
There seriously has never been as big a piece of garbage shipped by Apple as the on-going dumpster fire that is HomeKit. The fact that so many bugs still exist after about ten years tells you everything you need to know about the (lack of) intelligence of that team.

Except they're not going to add it to the Nest Learning Thermostat, only the Google Nest Thermostat, which is BS

Unless these companies are straight up lying, most of the major ones have committed to upgrading their current offerings to Matter. Outside of my security cameras and vacuum, which I believe Matter doesn't support yet, all my smart home items have been pledged to be upgraded.
