"The Google Nest Thermostat is one of the first smart thermostats that will support the new Matter smart home interoperability standard, launching this fall. Once it's updated to support Matter, the thermostat will work with any Matter-compliant smart home system, including Apple HomeKit and Siri."

Sadly, it only appears to apply to the newest, budget model. I don’t see mention of the others.

I’m also glad to see the battery savings that Thread brings to things, I think similar to Zigbee. I bought the new Yale Assure 2 lock and held off on a Wi-Fi module until the Matter one is released. I don’t want to change batteries in a lock 2-3 times a year.

Agreed. I was also not thrilled when Google bought Nest. I wish I had an Ecobee instead… oh well. Like you, I’m just waiting for it to die or need replacing. Seems frivolous to replace a perfectly good thermostat.

Those things don't die. I had one for a decade and it was as good as new. Sell it, there are buyers for everything.

Your comment was referring to Nest-HomeKit compatibility with Matter. The old "non-budget" thermostat doesn't support many things at this point, so not sure how that sets a threshold for compatibility. It's irrelevant.
